Lauren Ambrose gives rare interview, says motherhood makes her a better actress
New York-area fans of Six Feet Under who miss their weekly dose of Lauren Ambrose can see her this summer as Juliet, in Shakespeare In The Park’s rendition of Romeo and Juliet. The 29-year-old actress, who is notoriously press-shy, spoke recently about her role in the play and her reluctance to have details of her private life revealed to the public.
After a casual conversation with a reporter about the intricacies of breastfeeding her 4-month-old son Orson Halcyon Handel while in the midsts of rehearsals, Lauren said she had nightmares about what would eventually wind up in print.
You asked me about my day, and I just started talking about, you know, breast milk production for no f–king reason. And then I had a dream I was looking for you everywhere and I found you in a movie theater and I asked you not to write about it. And you were like ‘Yeah. Uh-huh. We’ll see.’
Life for Lauren and her husband, photographer Sam Handel, is unquestionably hectic at the moment; Lauren said she often eats her meals while holding Orson in one arm and reading her script with the other. Still, Lauren seems happy with the pace — and the new perspective that motherhood has brought her, both professionally and personally.
Having my son, I mean, I feel already that it makes me a better actress. Just the feeling and the love that expands in my … being is more than I ever thought possible.
