Naomi Watts: The simplest moments mean so much

Naomiwatts081007_03_cbbActress Naomi Watts, 38, tells The Early Show that her favorite moments of motherhood thus far are the private moments she has with her son.

When he starts engaging and he’s looking at you when you’re feeding him — just the most simple moments that can mean so much. I love it. It’s just babyworld. Tunnel vision.

Alexander ‘Sasha’ Pete will be 8 weeks old tomorrow.

Naomi Watts: No to kids movies, yes to more babies

Naomi_watts_070827_15_cbbAt a press conference on Tuesday for her new film Eastern Promises, actress Naomi Watts, who turns 39 later this month, showed a bit of ambivalence when asked just how many Watts-Schreiber co-productions we can expect to see in the future. Hint: Anywhere from the one they already have up to five!

I would like five more. Five is excessive, particularly for someone myage! I’d love three. Thatmight be pushing it, so two. But one’s great, too. We’ll see.

As mom to Alexander Pete — ‘But we call him Sasha, because that’s the shortened, Russian version of Alexander‘ — 7 weeks, Naomi is reflective when asked how she plans to balance motherhood with her workload, a topic she discussed earlier in the week as well.

I’m only six weeks into motherhood, sowe’ll see how things evolve. In terms of content, I don’t see thatchanging. I’m not going to start making movies for kids. That’s not how I’veever approached my work. It’s just what I respond to, what’s truthful, what speaks to me.

I tend to make my choices — they’re driven often by the director — asI feel film is their medium. They are teachers and give guidance. And Iimagine that would stay the same. Maybe later on, I’ve got to do onefor my son to impress his friends!

Playing a large part in her decisions will be the schedule of fiance Liev Schreiber, 39 — he will have a chance to do his stage and screen projects, but Naomi hopes he’ll help with the heavy lifting as well.

It’schallenging, especially traveling with all the equipment. But I thinkI can say for certain the questions I have to ask first before eachproject that is offered to me is how long, and where. And then there will be a discussion with Liev, and whose turn is it to work and if they overlap, how long for.

Naomi Watts on giving birth, her 'fiery' son, and being a working mom

Schreiber_watts_082507_01_cbbComing in from the adjoining hotel room, where she’s just nursed her son, actress Naomi Watts, 38, is aware that she’s not at the top of her game at the moment as she prepares for another interview to promote Eastern Promises, her latest film.

There’s no question I’m not as present as I would normally be rightnow. But I am here.

At the forefront of her mind is her new son, Alexander Pete, for whom she and fiance Liev Schreiber — inspired by his Ukrainian heritage — use the Slavic nickname ‘Sasha.’ Rubbing her stomach, Naomi jokes,

My belly is empty, but it still hasn’t gone away! I think Sasha is going to help me find greater meaning in justabout everything I do. I’m really just beginning to get a handle on itmentally, because the whole birth thing is such a physical and dramaticexperience. You’re so in your body that it’s almost an out-of-bodyexperience.

I keep replaying the birth in my mind because it was so powerful. There’s a little tiny creature in that room next door, and I’m stillgetting used to that. Last year at this time, he was just an idea. Nowhe’s a reality. He’s a Leo and he’s got two fiery parents, so he’sdefinitely got fire.

As Naomi previously revealed, she was studying hard for her role as a midwife in the film when she first became aware that her little fireball was on his way.

Three weeks into it, I found out I was pregnant and that changedthings a little. There were a lot of night shoots, and I didn’t feelall that well, and my mind was filled with all these different thoughtsabout the fact that I was going to be a mother. On the upside, I was playing a midwife, so all the research washighly informative.

Like all new mothers, Naomi is struggling to define what being a mother — and a working one at that — means to her.

I want to be a good mum. I’m not quite sure exactly what that means to me. But I’ve got friends who have given upeverything to be there for their family, but I’ve always wondered, arethey at peace with themselves?

I think balancing career and family is just one of those things youhave to work out as you go along. I think it’s important to keepgrowing as a human being and to take care of your own needs as well asyour family’s, but I don’t know if you should abandon your own life foryour child’s. I love my work, and if it were just a job to me, I’d behappy to leave it behind. But it’s not.

Naomi says she and Liev both plan to do fewer movies, but will not be putting their careers on the back burner — instead, they will just work out for themselves the best way to go about working and parenting simultaneously.

I think the two of us can keep working, but always with the idea ofbeing together as much as possible as a family. But in the end, I thinkthere is no right way. You have to figure out what’s right for you asyou go along. At least, at this point in my career, I takecomfort in the fact that I feel I have nothing left to prove.

For her part, Naomi has a busy few months coming up. After promotion for Eastern Promises ends, she has a few short weeks off before beginning filming on The International in November. Naomi plans to balance the needs of her son with her employer’s needs as well.

It won’t be easy because I’m breastfeeding. But I’mcommitted to my work. I love it. It keeps me alive. Besides, I feel ifI’m feeding myself creatively, I’m also feeding my child in a creativeway.

Naomi Watts explains Alexander Pete's name; brushes away wedding rumors

Naomiwatts081007_03_cbbActress Naomi Watts, 38, currently promoting Eastern Promises at the Toronto Film Festival, shared a bit more about motherhood and her 6-week-old son, Alexander Pete, during an interview on Saturday. Expounding on her earlier statements about nursing, Naomi remarked,

Everything is scheduled around feeding and I have intervals ofabout two-to-three hours. Butthat’s kind of my life right now and I love it. Life has changed dramatically. It’s all about the baby. You thinkvery differently. Everything requires more planning and you can’t be asspontaneous. He’s just such an innocent little bundle of joy and it’s such apowerful thing.

I’m still getting in touch with this whole experience. A year ago having a baby was just an idea. Now it’s real and he’s just so dependent on us. I could just spendhours gazing at him and I’m very proud of him.

After showing off photos of Alexander to the reporter, Naomi revealed that fiance Liev Schreiber had to leave for filming in Lithuania. But he wasn’t far from her mind, especially as she had to field questions about just when it is they’re planning to tie the knot. According to Naomi, don’t hold your breath for anything soon — they’re just fine with staying engaged.

We’re happy as we are right now.

One thing Naomi was happy to explain was the origin of her son’s names — something she and Liev had discussed at length during the pregnancy, but were unable to come to a final decision on until after the birth.

Then at the hospital we decided to go with these two names.Alexander is after Liev’s grandfather and Peter was my [late] father.

Naomi Watts opens up about the 'powerful experience' of pregnancy and motherhood

Naomi_watts_070827_15_cbbAppearing on Good Morning America earlier today to promote her new film Eastern Promises, actress Naomi Watts, 38, spoke for the first time about her pregnancy and mothering 6-week-old Alexander Pete, her son with fellow actor Liev Schreiber.

For her role in the film, Naomi, who plays a midwife, began studying pregnancy and childbirth in-depth to portray her character to the best of her ability — and scaring herself in the process. Little did she know, the information would come in handy in her personal life a bit sooner than she was expecting — two weeks into filming, Naomi discovered that she was pregnant.

It was really interesting timing actually, I didn’t know I was pregnant until…I had been in London about two weeks when I found out. I was doing all this research of midwifery and turning up at hospitals watching live births, and thinking, ‘Oh my God. This is going to be a hard thing for me if I ever get there.’

And there I was, pregnant all that time! It was just funny because I had been reading these books and then suddenly I was hiding them because I didn’t want anyone to know I waspregnant. [laughs]

However, she made it through, giving birth to Alexander Pete naturally on July 25th. Motherhood has been a transforming experience for Naomi.

He’s fantastic. He’s just gorgeous. And I’m a very proud momma!  It’s such a powerful experience, and each day it getsmore and more powerful. Just getting to know that little person…and I still just can’t get over that six weeks ago this little guy was in mybody, and he’s moving [around]…it’s just such a bizarre thing!

When asked what Alexander was doing while she was appearing on the show, Naomi laughed and replied,

He’s sleeping, hopefully! I got here…you time everything. It’s all about timing now if you’re nursing. I fed him, and then here, and then race back!

Eastern Promises opens in limited release on September 14th, and goes wide on the 21st.
