Celebrities' favorite bedtime stories

People magazine is running a feature this week on what celebrities read their children at night. Greg Kinnear, Jada Pinkett Smith, Liv Tyler, Mariska Hargitay, Rainn Wilson, and Sarah Jessica Parker participated – here are their choices!

Picture_1_3Sarah Jessica Parker, mom to James Wilke, 4: For Every Child, A Better World ($9.95) by United Nations Publications. ‘It’s the cold hard facts [about world poverty]. We’ve read it every night for weeks, and he still asks, ‘Why don’t those children have what they need?’ Because he lives in a country where clean water and food are at arm’s length, it’s hard for him to internalize why they aren’t available to everyone.

, mom to Jaden Christopher Syre, 8 1/2, and Willow Camille Reign, 6: Children’s books by Fred Crump, Jr ($10.36). ‘They’re black fairy tales I found that are kind of underground. They’re written by a guy who took all of the classic fairy tales and re-created them with black characters. My daughter loves them. They’re her favorite!

039480089301lzzzzzzzgifMariska Hargitay, mom to August Miklos Friedrich, 10 months: The Sneetches and Other Stories ($9.42) by Dr. Seuss. ‘All of the Seuss books are so brilliant. They’re rhythmic, and kids like that. My husband Peter and I read to our son August and do different voices. Then August eats the books. He doesn’t discriminate. He’ll eat whatever we have.’

Milo Langdon's relationship with grandpa Steve Tyler

LivActress Liv Tyler, 29, who recently took some time off to spend with her son, Milo, 2, gave OK! Magazine an inside look on her life as a mother, her struggle to lose the baby weight, and Milo’s relationship with her father, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler.

Liv says about her father and Milo’s grandfather,

Let’s just say my dad is not the best grandfather in the world, because, truthfully, he’s not with Milo much. But when they’re together, they get along. He’s always traveling; that’s why I don’t see him as much as I would like to. It’s the way he makes a living, and I don’t criticize him for that.

Click below for more highlights.

Are your children’s grandparents as involved as you’d like them to be? Or would you like them to be LESS involved?!

Jada Pinkett Smith and Liv Tyler on being working moms

Reign Over Me co-stars Jada Pinkett Smith and Liv Tyler spoke about what it was like working on the film with little ones back home to take care of. Jada says she was able to balance the two efficiently with help from husband Will and her mother looking after Willow, 6, Jaden, 8, and Trey, 14.

I have a great husband and a great mother. When I’m working, she’s helping me at home. At that particular time, Will wasn’t working so he could go pick the kids up and make sure they have all the chocolate cake they want for dinner [laughs and claps] ‘Yay, mommy’s working. Yay daddy!’ So I really think that’s how I’m able to do that.

As for Liv, Reign Over Me was the first film she made after having her son, Milo William, 2, with husband Royston Langdon, and she enjoyed her part-time shooting schedule.

I’ve had the great luxury of taking two years off from work which was amazing for me. I was so lucky I did that to be with my son. So, this was my first time back to work as a woman, a mom and I was a doctor, wow! [laughter]. It was great. I could go to set and work hard for a couple of days and then have a few days to be home.
