Jenny McCarthy has been extremely vocal since learning that her son, Evan Joseph, 5, has the brain development disorder autism. The actress has written a book, Louder Than Words: A Mother’s Journey in Healing Autism, joined forces with Talk About Curing Autism and not to mention numerous public appearances to let her voice be known.

Posh Cravings recently sat down with Jenny to discuss her son, what she is doing to help battle this disorder and her book.

Jenny had no idea that her son was battling autism, but decided to go with her "mommy instinct" and research other symptoms that he was having.

The 34-year-old mother has used her voice to try to make a difference in regards to autism and she is not giving up — in fact, she has more planned.

I have a think-tank meeting [Defeat Autism Now group conference] coming up with all the scientists and the doctors that have been healing these kids . . . And we got the AAP [American Academy of Pediatrics] to come for one of the days, so calling them worked!

With all of her advocacy, sometimes Jenny has to be away from Evan. For her recent press tour she was away from him for a week, and Evan was not a happy little boy.

Yeah, you know I’ve been so involved in Evan’s healing and being here for Evan that it’s kind of funny, that when I came home from this press tour, the first thing he said to me was, “I hate you and I want a new mom that can stay home with me.”

And while a statement like that may hurt most mothers, Jenny doesn’t mind.  In fact, it makes her feel good, because Evan is having normal reactions like any five-year-old.

I know! And the first thing I said [to myself] was “That was a great typical response.” And then I said, “Someday you are going to realize what Mommy did this week and forgive me.”

No matter what the future holds for Jenny and Evan, the proud mom is never going to stop fighting the battle against autism.

You know that God does not give you what you can’t handle. I knew I’ve always been a strong, pick-myself-up-off-the-ground kind of girl, no matter what. When it happened to me I said, “Yeah, this is not the type of motherhood that I expected, but this is the motherhood that I’ve been given. So I am not going to cry and say ‘Why?’ or ‘What if?’ I am going to move forward, forward, forward.” That is always the only option.

Jenny’s role as a proud mother shines through when she speaks about Evan and how much he has accomplished — including school.

He’s in Pre-K. I took him out of school for a year of healing when I was de-toxing [Evan], so he had missed a year of social development. But now he’s back in and perfectly on target with kids his age in school now.

I’m completely fine not having any more children. I completely love mine, and I love giving him all of my attention.

When asked how Evan is progressing, she replies,

He’s doing great! I pick him up from preschool, take him to gym class, thenspeech therapy. I take him home, we play, I feed him, I give him a bathand then I read him a bedtime story and put him to bed. So that’s myworkout.

And whoever said that was easy?! I did not enjoy that, not for one minute…I heard Savannah come out cause I knew she was coming out first and Iwas waiting and waiting for Eden. But I didn’t realize they got themout so fast that they were both out. I was thinking something is wrongand she was already out. 

Jenny agreed, saying, ‘It’s horrible, it’s horrible — it’s hard when they have you strapped down ’cause you’re like, ‘I just want to hold my baby!” Rosie shared, ‘[My wife] Kelli had one too [with their daughter Vivi] and she was in bed for a long time afterwards.’ Joy lightened the mood, saying, ‘But the babies probably look beautiful, because they don’t have to go through that tunnel — they don’t get mushed — their head squashed. They just come out — ‘Hi, I’m gorgeous!”

Rosie said, ‘I always thought, if you don’t believe in God, watch a baby get born — and it will change your perspective. It was really the most amazing thing I’ve ever witnessed in my life.’ Jenny agreed, saying, ‘Your heart — you feel it explode.’

About her twin daughters Eden and Savannah, Marcia said,

I’m so deliriously happy, I just can’t even breathe. They’re fraternal and they’re already so different, they’re just completely different beings. They’re on the same schedule right from the beginning – every three hours.They’re still in that narcissistic phase – ‘No, I’m the only baby. No, I’m the only baby.’ 

She shared the story again about how the girls’ got their names, and mentioned, ‘I don’t think Tom was crazy about Eden, but he went with it.’

Marcia also mentioned that she’s a fan of The View - she tapes it and watches it while she pumps her milk!

What was your c-section experience? Do you agree with Rosie and Jenny’s views on witnessing birth?

Jenny, who runs IndigoMoms.com, is of the belief that Evan is a ‘crystal child,’ and she herself is an ‘adult indigo.’ This belief suggests that ‘indigo/crystal phenomenon is the next step in our evolution as a human species.’ Proponents also suggest that many indigo and crystal children are wrongly diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, and autism. CBB reader Emma’s Mom knows Jenny and leaves this comment,

I thought you all should know that I happen to know that Jenny does take it very seriously and has Evan in a really great program at UCLA for autistic kids and it has nothing to do with the indigo/crystal thing.  She is, from what I have seen, an absolutely wonderful, loving mom of her kid. 

Having experience with a few autistic kids myself and following a few adult autistics I can tell you that what she is doing is interesting. She’s removing the ‘there’s something broken in my child and adding ‘there is something special in my child that others don’t see.’  I love that, personally, as I too see the something special in there. 

It doesn’t replace therapy and it doesn’t spew fake science.   I just had to step in here and defend her from these, what I consider to be, unfair attacks.
