Glenn Close talks about her close relationship with her daughter

Glenn_close_g_b_gr_06_cbbLike any parent, Glenn Close had a difficult time seeing herdaughter Annie Maude, 19, off to college last year. So difficult it wasthat Glenn draws upon that milestone moment whenever she has a cryingscene to shoot. Annie, on the other hand, was more than ready to getout on her own, a fact her mom loves.

It was a big deal. I did cry when I left her. Meanwhile, she wasthrilled! Annie was just so ready. I’ve always thought it was a reallygood sign to have an independent, strong child who wasn’t afraid toventure out from home. I’m my child’s custodian. I don’t expect her tobe like me. I just want her to be safe, to have good values, and to beable to eventually find work that’s fulfilling.

Glenn and Annie have always shared a tight bond as Glenn raised Annieas a single parent since she was 2 years old (dad is ex John Starke).Because of that, the Damages star has always been picky with her roles, never wanting to be away from Annie for too long a period of time, especially during her teenage years. Glenn, 60, famously declined to renew her contract on the L.A.-based The Shield for a second season two years ago becauseshe wanted to be around for Annie’s senior year of high school in NewYork.

After the sixth grade, when she started having a real life atschooland she was on various teams, I couldn’t haul her out of schoolanymore…[The Shield] was too far away from Annie…It’s always abalancing act. Ever since I became a mom, everything’s a balancing act.And now I’m wonderfully married and want to be with my husband [DavidShaw].
