Chris Rock assumed three titles on his new film I Think I Love My Wife – co-writer, director and star. It was all work he was glad to do though – for his daughters, Lola Simone Rock, 4, and Zahra Savannah Rock, 2. The comedian tells Life magazine that he loves working for his family after seeing his late father, Julius, labor away at work and come home dead tired to support Chris and his six siblings.
I always wondered what he really wanted to do. Now that I’m older and have my own kids, I realize there’s nothing better than to work for your kids. I’m sure he got more gratification from his work [driving a New York Daily News truck] than I do. With me, if I make X amount of money tomorrow, is it really going to affect my kids’ lives? My father was feeding his kids every week, paying the heating bills. If he didn’t [work], then it didn’t get done. There’s a tremendous amount of gratification from that. And a tremendous amount of pressure, too.
Fatherhood, Chris says, has also made him more patient and less reclusive. Before he had children, he felt isolated in show business as he could only relate to people in similar situations, but his daughters have since opened him up to a new world.
You have something in common with just about everybody. I think I’m a better artist. Everything I’ve done since I’ve had kids is better than the stuff I did before I had kids.
The 42-year-old only wishes for his girls’ happiness as well. When asked if he’d be happy if they married a guy like himself, Chris responded:
I’d be happy if they married any guy or girl. I don’t care, just be happy. Marry a giraffe for all I care. Just be happy.
Chris and his wife, Malaak Compton-Rock, have been married for 10 years.
