Dannielynn celebrates first birthday with a bash fit for a princess

Larry Birkhead went all out for his daughter, Dannielynn’s, first birthday party which took place a day after her birthday on September 8. It included over 200 guests, an inflatable princess castle and two hot air balloons at the home of Tricia Barnstable Brown in Louisville, Kentucky. And while it was a princess theme, the character Barney made his appearance in a couple of places including the little girl’s high chair, where she ate a chocolate and vanilla castle shaped cake.

The Insider‘s Lara Spencer spent some time with Larry discussing various aspects of his daughter’s life including her mother, the late Anna Nicole Smith, who passed away when Dannielynn was five months old. What would Larry say to Anna if he could on this special occasion?

I would say, ‘I hope you’re proud of the way she’s growing up and getting big.’

Dannielynn also lost her older brother, Daniel Smith, when she was just three days old and while he may no longer be here, you can still see glimpses of him in his sister. When asked about a resemblance between the two, Larry shared,

Yeah, sometimes. Especially when she gets out of the bath and her hairis parted to the side like a little boy, she looks a lot like Daniel.

Larry does everything that he can to try to ensure that his little girl will know her mother and brother. The 34-year-old father shared,

I show her pictures all the time and I say, ‘This is your mommy andthis is your brother Daniel.’ We talk about them all the time.

When all was said and done, Larry just wanted to provide his daughter with a fun day fit for a princess and when asked what he hoped to give her, he said,

Another happy day in life. I know she’s not going tounderstand everything that’s going on but just something that she cansay one day, ‘Wow, what a cool party, what a cool dad!’

Sunday, June 17th marked the first Father’s Day for Larry Birkheadand he and daughter Dannielynn Hope, 9 months, celebrated in style at Anna Nicole Smith‘s L.A. pad, into which they’re planning to move. In anexclusive interview with OK! Magazine, Larry gave all the details onthe big day, Dannielynn’s new milestones and how they remember Anna Nicole.

Read on for highlights, photos, and to see what Larry’s sister,Angela Birkhead Johnson, has to say about her brother and new niece.

Waking up on Father’s Day: I just thought it would be one of thegreatest days of my life. You always give your dad presents and spendthe day with him. The best gift for me was just to wake up and haveDannielynn there looking up and smiling at me.

Sharing Father’s Day with his dad: He’s actually a little jealousbecause I have to divide my time up today for my own daughter. I’d bewith him, but this is kind of my day, so I had to say, ‘Sorry, Pops,today’s my day now too,’ but he understands.

How he and Dannielynn spent the day: We had breakfast in bed and played withtoys and went swimming. She loves the water; she’s a little fish andjust kicks away. If I let her, she could probably go and win theOlympic gold medal. Then she played dress up with her cousin Chloewho’s here. They were really cute together. Later, we had an ice creamcake from Cold Stone Creamery, and Dannielynn put cake all over my faceand ruined one of her dresses – but it was all worth it because sheloved the icing. She was wearing a shirt that said, ‘My Daddy is King’but had to take that off and slipped into a cute shirt from Kitson witha big heart on it and then a pink dress. She had more outfit changesthan J.Lo. She had a really good time.

Dinner plans: We’re going to finish the night with dinner, and I’mgoing to let her have her first French fry. It’s the only food she canmash up with her teeth.

On teething: She has two on the bottom, two on top and is getting twolittle ones coming in on top. She’s doing really well. She’s not evenbad teething. She’s really being a good sport about it. She’ll bite onmy fingers, and those teeth hurt – they’re like little saws. It seemslike every day I look at her mouth, there’s a little piece of whitepopping out of her gums, and it’s so cute. It might be hurting her, butif it is, she’s not letting on.

On baby foods: They have graduated stages of baby food, and she’s upto #3. It’s a lot of kiddie-type gourmet meals like lasagna with meatsauce, macaroni and cheese, and she likes to eat bananas right out ofthe peel; I call her my little monkey now.

On her first word: She says, ‘ging, ging, ging’ over and over. Whenshe sees me, she starts kicking her feet and stuff, but she doesn’thave a lot of words yet. I keep coaching her to say, ‘Dada,’ but ithasn’t worked out yet. I think it’s going to be any day now.

Remembering Anna: I show her pictures of Anna all the time, andshe grabs them! I show her photos of Anna on my BlackBerry, and shekisses the phone and tries to put it in her mouth. She doesn’t do thatwith other photos, so it’s really sweet. I don’t know if it’s somethingshe recognizes, but I tell her about her mommy all the time and we goout and look up in the clouds.

On having a nanny: When I hired a nanny, I didn’t get her to be areplacement or to mimic a female influence. She’s just there to assistme, not to take over any parenting. People think a nanny is areplacement for a mother, but that wasn’t my goal and it isn’t thecase. I want to be there for all the milestones and experience allthose things. I’m really hands-on, like too hands-on with my hand onthe baby, a hand on the cell phone, a hand on the diaper. I’m getting alot better at multitasking and learning to do more with one hand. Theold invention of the speakerphone is becoming a new friend again. Butit’s a good balance, and just because I have a nanny doesn’t mean thatI’m not constantly changing diapers. I have a supersonic sense ofsmell when it comes to diapers.

Dannielynn’s got rhythm: She has an ABC school bus that is now herfavorite toy, and she kicks her legs to the ABCs and really kicks whenI start singing along with it. She loves music, and she’s starting todance. She gets crazy when she hears singing. She loves it so much Ithink she’s going to be in the music business or something. She’s gotlots of rhythm.

On playtime: I think I’m her favorite toy in a way. I say thatbecause when I put her on my knee, she bounces up and down like it’s ahorse. That’s one of the only things that makes her smile every singletime. And she likes to play rocket. I say, ’1,2,3′ and I shoot her uplike a rocket. She knows that three comes after two, and she waits forit and her eyebrows go up. When I bring her back down, I act like I’msnoring and she taps me on my face to wake me up.

On Dannielynn’s features: As she’s getting a little older, I’m seeingmore of me than I did when she was a little baby. More people aretelling me she looks like me now that they can see the side-by-sidecomparison, but I see Anna in some faces she makes at me and say,’Whoa, that’s your mom.’ And sometimes I see Daniel. Her hair isgrowing in, with some parts short and some long, and when it’s parteda certain way, I see Daniel, so it’s a good mix. She definitely has hermother’s legs and feet and toes exactly. She has long legs and chubbylittle toes exactly like Anna’s; it’s like a mirror image. It’s reallyincredible. And I think her lips are her mom’s lips; especially whenshe pouts, she has her mom’s lips. She also gets what she wants exactlylike her mom always did as soon as she’d pout.

On Howard K. Stern, who was in town on business: He and hisparents bought me a Father’s Day gift and a present for Dannielynn, andhe still has a car seat in his car so he drove her and the nanny frommy apartment to Anna’s because I had to drive the moving truck. He’sbeen really supportive, and we’re civil for the sake of Dannielynn.

On the paparazzi: I was a photographer and I understand they needa picture, but when they’re running you off the road and you’re in thecar with your daughter and they’re putting lenses up to the car so thatit’s like lightning in the car, it gets to be too much. I miss thequietness, but it feels good to be back home.

On moving into Anna’s house: I’m taking it one step at a time, anyday now hopefully. I’ve been working so many nights trying to get itready and perfect for Dannielynn. I want to get it so there’s a pieceof Anna but also a piece of me so that I’m not constantly seeing hershadow. I’m getting Dannielynn’s nursery ready. She’s going
to be thefirst baby with a plasma TV. I’ve got her a little music system and allthe little toys that were in her mom’s hope chest.

Larry’s sister, Angela, brought her daughter Chloe, 3, from Texasto visit Larry and Dannielynn and here’s what she had to say aboutseeing her brother as a father.

Larry as a dad: I always knew Larry would be an excellent fatherbecause he’s so good with all of our kids. My kid was the firstgrandchild, and he just took to Larry. My son (Justin, now 16) waslike Larry’s little brother. They even look alike. Larry is my son’shero. If he sees Larry wearing a shirt, he wears the same shirt.[Larry's] so much more comfortable now. I think he has gotten in thegroove of things and he’s so comfortable feeding her and changing herdiapers.

Larry always wanted to be a dad: Larry always talked about wantingkids someday. Once his career took off, he always wanted to settle downand have children.

On Dannielynn: She looks so healthy and happy and has littlechubby cheeks. She was so happy just being on Larry’s stomach andlooking at him. Her overall demeanor is excellent. You would neverthink she’d been through everything she’d been through.

Parenting advice: Just lots of unconditional love.

Daniel Smith inquest began today…and is already stalled

And so the Anna Nicole Smith saga continues, only this time regarding her late son. An inquest into the death of Anna Nicole’s 20-year-old son, Daniel Smith, who died in September, in a Bahamas hospital, stalled Tuesday before the court could even pick a jury.
Soon after the court convened, reporters were ordered to leave the courtroom when Wayne Munroe, a lawyer for the estate of Anna Nicole, asked the judge to consider a motion that “relates to the impaneling of a jury to act on this inquiry.”It is expected that the court could take at least another day to resolve the issue raised by Wayne Munroe and the inquest would not resume before Thursday. Jurors are excused until then.
The jury is expected to hear from dozens of witnesses, including Howard K. Stern, as they consider whether Daniel’s death should be ruled an accident, suicide or a homicide.In September, Dr. Cyril Wecht, a forensic pathologist hired by Anna Nicole herself, concluded that Daniel died from methadone and two antidepressants interacting in his system. But the case remains open, according to Bahamian authorities. The inquest is expected to last up to three to four weeks. If the jury finds criminal activity played a role, it would be up to the Bahamian attorney general’s office to pursue the case.

Update: The New Times reporter who wrote the story tells CBS Showbuzz that

[Johnny] spins quite a tale. He has documents to back it up and photos. I don’t know. I’m not anexpert in documents, (but) he had enough for me to believe that he waswho he said he was.

However, CBB reader Erin points us to Indianz.com and BlueCornComics.com, who say this paper regularly writes spoof news articles which they publish, angering readers who think they may be real. The piece was a joke meant to draw attention to the Indian reservation.

Originally posted 3:20 pm:A Native American man named Johnny Soto has come out of the woodwork saying that his son, Marshall Black Deer Soto, is Anna Nicole Smith‘s biological son. And he says he has a birth certificate with Anna listed as the mother to prove it.

According to Johnny, he met Anna when he was a handyman as theSanctuary Resort and Spa on Camelback Mountain, outside of Scottsdale, where she was staying.After many repairs to her casita, the two began a passionate affair.

He says that the large amount of weight Anna gained in 2001 was anattempt to hide the pregnancy. The baby was delivered at Burbank’sProvidence Saint Joseph’s Hospital, and was assisted by a medicine manfrom Johnny’s Tohono O’odham reservation. They named the baby Marshall after Anna’s late husband, with the middle name of Black Deer, from a dream the medicine man had about Johnny and Anna’s coupling.

Shortly after Marshall’s birth, Anna began shooting her E! realityshow and gave Johnny custody of the baby and deposited $10,000 a monthin his bank account for child support. She flew Johnny and Marshall toLA for visits, and said she planned to return to Johnny and their son,writing, "Oh, my brave Injun-man, how I long to be with you and feelyour red manhood. Look after my little paapoosie [sic], and soon I’llbe your squaw again. I love you, kemosabe, Anna."

Johnny says she self-medicated her postpartum depression withZoloft, Demerol, methadone, and Phenergan. Her drug-adled behaviorscared Johnny and he took Marshall back to the Tohono O’odhamreservation in Arizona. He allowed Anna to visit with Howard K. Stern. She told Johnny that once she won the battle over her late husband’s estate that she would give him and "my little brown one" a portion of the money.

So why are we only hearing about this child now? The monthlypayments stopped when Anna died. Johnny told the Phoenix New Times,

We’re not greedy, but Marshall’s older than Dannielynn, and I want himto have what’s rightfully his. That’s one reason I decided to gopublic. I didn’t know where else to turn. Right now the tribe ishelping me, and if we win, I’ll make sure they get half of whateverMarshall inherits. I want him to grow up on the reservation, to learnour language and what we call the O’odham ‘himdag’, the O’odham way oflife. But we can’t do it by ourselves. This is the white man’s law, andwe need someone who knows the white man’s law to help.

Johnny must know that a DNA test can prove his story true or false.We think he could be telling the truth because the wording in Anna’swill about her estate only going to Daniel and no other child was awfulfishy.

Florida judge says Larry Birkhead has to wait for California ruling

Florida family court Judge Lawrence Korda said that he can’t decide whether a DNA sample may be taken from Anna Nicole Smith‘s daughter Dannielynn to see if Larry Birkhead is her biological father because he doesn’t have jurisdiction. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Robert Schneider will be making the decision on whether a DNA test may be performed.

The Florida judge ordered a DNA sample to be taken from Anna’s body prior to burial for future potential testing. He also said, somewhat confusingly, that is it "conceivable" by Florida law for Dannielynn to have two fathers. Huh?

Many people are asking what’s so difficult about performing this test that they won’t allow it to be take place. It has nothing to do with actually performing the test. It’s a fairly routine procedure- after all, they’re doing it on CSI all the time, right? It’s also physically non-invasive- just swab the inside of the cheek (test kit pictured above). The overriding issue is Dannielynn’s current guardian’s desire to have the test performed. So the question is – why does Howard not want to have the test performed? The most obvious answer is that Howard knows he isn’t Dannielynn’s biological father and in refusing to consent to the test, he secures his position as her guardian.

TMZ’s sources tell them that Howard will cooperate if the price is right. He wants the boat and house that Anna bought before her death (not where he is staying now). He would also get control of Dannielynn’s inheritance (which includes all of Anna’s assets).

In respect to the disposition of her mother’s body, Richard Milstein was a guardian ad litem, appointed to represent the interests of Dannielynn with respect to a single action. He can’t make the decision in other actions. She will likely be assigned another in California, but it doesn’t appear that the person will be able to make the decision outside of a court.

Anna Nicole Smith's mother visits her granddaughter Dannnielynn

Anna Nicole Smith’s motherVirgie Arthur finallygot what she’s been wishing for, for weeks… a visitwith her granddaughter. Virgie was granted permissionto visit 5-month-old Dannielynn in the Bahamas on last night. She visited Dannielynn from 8-9 pm last night at Horizons, Howard K. Stern‘s current accommodations. According to TMZ ‘s sources, when Virgie left, she looked and acted "distraught." Larry Birkhead also visited Dannielynn for the first time this week.

Howard had previously deniedpermission for Virgie to visit the baby. Herlawyers talked with reporters on Tuesday:

She’s in mourning, having lost her daughter andgrandson both within the last five months. Ourobjective is really to assist our client in havingaccess to her granddaughter and foremost to ensure thebest interests and welfare of the child are secured.

Virgie is still fighting to have her daughter buriedin her native Texas, while Howard and Larry Birkhead are inagreement that Anna Nicole should be buried next toher son, Daniel Smith, in the Bahamas.

Anna Nicole Smith tried to befriend Britney Spears

Before her death, and during both of their second pregnancies, Anna Nicole Smith recorded and sent a video expressing her desire to become friends with Britney Spears. The video recorded six months ago has Anna saying,

If yousee this for some oddball reason – because I look at your stuff, too[referring to Spears’ Web site] – and you want to be friends, I wouldlove so much to hang out with you. I think you’re totallycool, and I think we’re about to have babies around the same time…Iwould just love to meet you.

You can call my lawyer, my best friend, my confidante Howard Stern. I think everyone has his number. He’ll give it out to you, Britney. Take cares [sic],and I hope that you do great on your second pregnancy. I’m sure youwon’t even see this, but if you do, I’d really love to talk to you.Bye.

According to a source close to Britney, the blonde moms never met. Their babies were born five days apart, then Anna’s son Daniel Smith died, Britney got divorced, etc. Though the idea of them being friends is scarier to us than Britney and Paris Hilton’s short-lived BFFriendship, perhaps knowing someone who (probably) died from a drug overdose might affect Britney’s own recovery.

Anna Nicole Smith's former nanny makes accusations

It just keeps getting weirder. Anna Nicole Smith’s nanny filed an affadavit in the Bahamas making pretty crazy claims about Anna regarding care of Anna’s daughter Dannielynn Hope Marshall Stern. The nanny, Quethlie Alexis, worked for Anna from September 7 – November 30, when she says she was fired for misplacing a washing machine manual. She filed the affadavit on December 4th because she said "I am therefore concerned for the baby’s welfare."

Please note that this affadavit was filed -prior- to Anna’s death and immediately after she was fired.

In the affadavit, she said that Anna purposely had her underfeedDannielynn. She says Anna "was obsessed with making sure that her babywas ‘sexy.’ Ms. Marshall [aka Anna] knew that the correct amount ofbaby food was 3 ounces every 3 hours … Ms. Marshall insisted that themaximum I was to give was 2.5 ounces." Why? According to Quethlie,Anna was "obsessed with making sure that her baby was ‘sexy.’" Inorder to make sure Quethlie followed her orders, Anna kept the babymonitor on all the time so she could listen to her warming the formulain the microwave and feeding Dannielynn. Because of being underfed,she said, "Dannielynn is badly underweight and not thriving, as a babyshould."

Quethlie also alleges that she and the baby bonded veryclosely ("in the absence of Ms. Marshall in any bonding process withDannielynn), making Anna very jealous. She said Anna "accused me ofwishing Dannielynn to believe I was her mother (which is untrue)" andthat she told her "if ever Dannielynn were to call me ‘mummy,’ ‘I willhave to shoot you.’" Because of Anna’s "state of mind and generalbehaviour,"Quethlie said she believed her.

She stated that "the whole domestic regime for Dannielynn is wildand unpredictable and her feeding is improper. In addition, Ms.Marshall takes daily a lot of mood altering substances, with the resultthat she spends a lot of time asleep or resting in bed and when she isup and about, her mood swings are extreme and very unsettling and I amtherefore concerned for the baby’s welfare.

Quethlie also alleged that Anna tried to kill herself on twoseparate occasions by drinking a "liquid sleeping aid" and by drowningin a pool. She also concerned about Anna’s "flagrant sexual relationship" with the Bahamian Minister of Immigration.
