Giuliana Rancic Opens Up About Her Infertility Struggle

It took finding out that they weren’t expecting for reality stars Giuliana and Bill Rancic to realize that they wanted to become parents. Following a pregnancy scare during last season’s Giuliana & Bill, the pair began to second-guess their decision when the results came back negative, explains Giuliana.

“When we first thought I was pregnant, we thought, ‘Oh, I don’t know.’ [Later,] ‘Phew,’ turned into, ‘Let’s have a baby!'”

However, while their change of heart may have been spur of the moment, their ability to conceive is proving otherwise. “I thought we’d get pregnant right away,” Giuliana admits.

After eight months of trying to get pregnant on their own, the couple — who are hoping for twins — have turned to fertility specialists.

And while doctors haven’t found anything out of the ordinary, they admit that Giuliana, 35, and Bill, 38, have their biological clocks working against them. The E! host shares,

“Their diagnosis: ‘You guys are mid-to-late thirties. Sorry.'”

Despite Giuliana revealing that there have “been tears,” neither is prepared to give up hope. Brought “closer together” by their infertility struggle, Giuliana insists she is willing to do “whatever it takes” to realize her dream. “I envision our life with kids,” she says. Adds 2004 Apprentice winner Bill,

“It’s now or never!”

Céline Dion Will Keep Trying for a Baby

11/11/2009 at 08:50 AM ET
KCSPresse/Splash News Online

Céline Dion isn’t pregnant after all – but will keep on trying for a second child.

“We are living the reality of the majority of couples who have to use [IVF]. The process can be long and arduous,” Céline’s husband René Angélil, 67, told the Canadian paper Journal de Montreal of their failed attempts. “But today, we are full of confidence. Celine is more determined than ever.”

Forty-one-year-old Céline’s doctor announced that she was pregnant via in vitro fertilization very early in the process, and it is now revealed that the embryos transferred in August and October were unsuccessful.

“Dr. Zev Rosenwaks believed that the procedure/pregnancy took, but that wasn’t the case. We found out some days later. We were shocked,” said René.

They quickly tried again to get pregnant, but were unsuccessful, he added, “But you know Céline. She doesn’t let go.”

The couple have one “extraordinary” son, René-Charles, 8 ½, who was also conceived with the help of Rosenwaks, director of the Ronald O. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Center Medical Center.

“I admire all the women who go through such a tough process. Since April, she has undergone numerous examinations, multiple hormone injections and blood tests,” René told the paper, revealing the couple will go to New York this weekend for a third try. “Céline and I didn’t get discouraged … we put our faith in life and in the stars.”

Sparrow James Midnight: Behind the Richie-Madden's Name Choice

09/10/2009 at 11:00 AM ET

With many readers expressing their opinions on Joel Madden and Nicole Richie‘s choice of Sparrow James Midnight for their newborn son, we spoke to Linda Rosenkrantz, co-owner of NameBerry, as well as co-author of Beyond Ava & Aiden, to get her professional take on the moniker. She tells us,

“After Nicole and Joel gave their daughter the inventive name Harlow Winter Kate, there was much anticipation about what they would come up with for their second child — and they didn’t disappoint with their new son’s name, the equally unusual Sparrow James Midnight.

The two names have a perfect almost twin-like symmetry, one being ultra-feminine and the other very masculine. Sparrow has in the past been used for girls, but since the dynamically male appearance of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, it’s taken on a swashbuckling pirate persona — while Harlow projects Old Hollywood feminissima glamour.

Both have traditional middle names — James and Kate — as well as a second dramatic, time-related name, with the darkness of Midnight contrasting with the whiteness of Winter. (They also reflect the growing trend for double middle names.)

But symmetry can go too far, and if there’s one problem it’s that Harlow and Sparrow might be overly similar in sound and spelling, making it seem a bit like an outdated twin pairing.

Sparrow also reflects the growing popularity of bird names — along with other nature names — both with celebrities and others. Past favorites like Robin and Raven have been supplanted by fresher choices such as the soft, feminine, free-flying Lark, Wren, Teal, Dove and Starling.

Some celebrities have gone generic with Birdie (used by Busy Philipps and Maura West), Avis (Daniel Baldwin) and countless Avas, as well as the Spanish-for-dove Paloma (Ana Ortiz, David Caruso, and middle name of Salma Hayek’s Valentina), and the mythical Phoenix, used by Melanie Brown.”

What do you think of nature names? Would/did you use one for your child?

Laila Ali: Curtis is My Constant Companion Through It All

When Laila Ali found herself belly deep in her pregnancy, celebrating the joys and working through the tough moments, she relied on her main squeeze through it all: her husband Curtis Conway. “I think the person that supported me the most, and was closest to me on a regular basis throughout my pregnancy, was my husband,” she tells Us Weekly. Not only her partner, but “my best friend,” the 31-year-old gushes that Curtis gladly “stepped up to the plate” when needed the most. However, according to Laila, she wasn’t expecting any less from her husband of almost two years!

“He’s the one that’s there morning to night, knows what I’m dealing with, what I’m going through, what my most private thoughts are … I knew he would — that’s why I married him!”

Now the proud mama of 10-month-old Curtis Muhammad, Laila is determined to maintain her fitness regimen, even with baby boy in tow! “What I used to do when I was pregnant and also after I had my son — he was only weeks old — I would go for walks,” she recalls. “You can do a whole lot with your child right at your side.” In fact, the threesome have made exercising a family affair, as the routine not only allows Laila to encourage a healthy style of living for her child, but also creates the perfect bonding experience for all.

“I think it’s important for people to spend time together as a family, for parents to spend time with their kids, to be a part of their lives and exercising. Getting out and doing something as a family is not only free, but it’s a great way to stay on top of what’s going on in each other’s lives, connect as a family … and just build relationships.”

Thrilled to finally be a mother, Laila admits her greatest joy comes bright and early each morning. “When I see those bright eyes, it just brings so much joy to my heart,” she says.
