Tiffani Thiessen Is Hoping a Second Pregnancy Will Happen ‘Right Away’

09/11/2014 at 05:30 PM ET

Her best friend just became a big sister — and now Harper Smith wants to be next in line for a sibling.

In an exclusive interview with online magazine Sweden With Love, Tiffani Thiessen admits she wanted her daughter to hit that milestone several years ago, but when another White Collar star announced she was expecting, the actress put her own plans on hold.

“We were going to try two years ago because I was thinking I’d like them to be three years apart, but my costar on the show got pregnant,” says Thiessen, who is slated to begin filming for her new cooking show, Dinner at Tiffani’s, in the fall. “I thought I couldn’t do that to the show. So we ended up waiting.”

They say growing up is hard to do. But when it comes to kids, White Collar‘s Tiffani Thiessen thinks it’s even harder on the parents.

“There’s nothing baby about that kid anymore — which is hard!” Thiessen told PEOPLE of her 3-year-old preschooler Harper Renn at Disney Junior’s Doc McStuffins interactive Doc Mobile visit on Wednesday in New York City.

“It’s sad at the same time because the baby stage is definitely over.”

While her daughter skipped the infamous terrible twos, Thiessen, 39, says, “She’s definitely hit the independent stage: she’s a rumble-tumble. She loves putting bows on, but she loves to climb.”

The most surprising thing little Harper’s doing all by herself: water sports. “She’s fully swimming across our pool! No floaties, no nothing — it’s crazy,” Thiessen says, adding she or actor husband Brady Smith are always on hand with a watchful eye.

Don’t let the frilly dresses fool you — Tiffani Thiessen‘s daughter Harper Renn knows how to get her hands dirty, too.

“Any time this little girl can put on a princess dress, she is all for it,” Thiessen, 39, tells PEOPLE Tuesday at Oscar de la Renta’s “Mommy and Me” Soiree benefiting Baby Buggy.

“What’s so funny is she would wear that outside and pick up snails. She’s a very 50-50 kind of girl. She’s a true Gemini.”

Harper, who turns 3 in June, is in her “independent stage.”

“It’s all about her picking out her clothes, her getting dressed, her wanting to wear what she wants to wear,” says the actress. “It’s all about, ‘What can I do?'”

"We weren't trying to have kids. We left it up to fate. I knew there was a possibility, but I was really excited. Even if you are trying, just to see a positive result is shocking!"
