Extra, Extra! Inside Savannah Guthrie’s News-Themed Baby Shower

07/09/2014 at 08:00 AM ET

Forget diaper warmers, baby swings and whatever else might have been on the registry. The baby shower fellow newswomen threw for Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie on June 30 was all about her favorite thing: books.

With an “Extra! Extra! Read All About It” vintage newspaper theme, the noontime fête celebrated the mom-to-be’s love of reading as some two dozen guests — Today pals including Natalie Morales, Tamron Hall, Jenna Bush Hager, Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford, in addition to Amy Robach, Gayle King, Deborah Roberts and others from competing networks — piled a bookshelf in N.Y.C.’s The Glass Houses party space with their favorite children’s books. Each woman brought one book for Guthrie’s baby with husband Mike Feldman and a second to be donated to the charity Baby Buggy for a child in need.

“A lot of people inscribed the books with notes to the baby that were really cute,” Guthrie, 42, told PEOPLE. “It was really personal. I love that.”

At five months pregnant, Savannah Guthrie is already learning about the wonders of maternity wear.

“I did discover maternity jeans, and I’m going to be writing a song to maternity jeans later — it’s forthcoming off my upcoming album — called ‘Exhale,’ ” she joked to PEOPLE at The Hollywood Reporter’s 35 Most Powerful People in Media party Wednesday.

Sure, stretchy clothes are a pregnancy perk, but the Today show host knows the child she’s carrying is the real blessing.

“I just can’t wait to meet this little baby. I wonder all the time, ‘Who are you?’ ‘What are you going to be like?’ ” she said of her first child, due in August. “I just feel it’s such a privilege to get a chance to raise a little human being, and I hope we do it well.”

Savannah Guthrie Gets Style Help from Matt Lauer and Jenna Bush Hager

04/14/2014 at 04:00 PM ET

When it came to her attire for the “Make a Difference Day” awards luncheon in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Savannah Guthrie was less than prepared.

The Today coanchor had a slight case of “pregnancy brain” and forgot her change of clothes when she and castmates Matt Lauer and Jenna Bush Hager flew into town to attend the fancy affair honoring community volunteers. “I was in my maternity jeans!” the mom-to-be confided to PEOPLE.

So the trio, whose own make-a-difference project will be to build a playground for under-privileged children in Newark, N.J., made a quick stop at Neiman Marcus. How quick? “Sixteen minutes, 13 seconds,” said Lauer, who timed it on his iPhone.

Savannah Guthrie Is Married and Pregnant

03/17/2014 at 10:00 AM ET

We interrupt this cocktail hour with breaking news.

The mariachi band serenading Savannah Guthrie and Michael Feldman down the aisle after their “I do’s” was not the only surprise in store for guests at the couple’s hush-hush weekend wedding.

Just as family and friends — an intimate gathering of 80 to 90 people — were sitting down to dinner, NBC anchor Guthrie, 42, and Feldman, 45, said a few thank-yous and reminded guests to keep the nuptials secret until Guthrie could announce it herself on air on Today Monday morning.

That’s when the DJ hit “play” on a recording of the NBC News “Special Report” music, an insider at Saturday’s sunset celebration outside Guthrie’s hometown of Tucson, Ariz., tells PEOPLE.

“Savannah looked at Mike, and said, ‘So, should we break some news? Okay. I — we — are four months pregnant!’ It was an explosive moment. Everyone was on their feet, cheering,” the source reports.

Mom Said It

"We weren't trying to have kids. We left it up to fate. I knew there was a possibility, but I was really excited. Even if you are trying, just to see a positive result is shocking!"
