Sarah Jessica Parker Reveals How Robert Downey Jr. Taught Her How to Love and Be a Good Parent

Sarah Jessica Parker is opening up about the lessons she learned as a result of her relationship with Robert Downey Jr.

The former couple met on the set of their film Firstborn and dated for seven years in the ’80s and early ’90s before calling it quits.

“It taught me how I love,” the Divorce star told PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly Editorial Director Jess Cagle of her relationship with the actor, who struggled with drug and alcohol abuse during much of their time together, ultimately leading to their demise.

Adds Parker, 51, “And what’s the difference between loving and taking care of people and what’s necessary, and what grown-ups should and shouldn’t do for one another.”

Sarah Jessica Parker has been exposed to all sorts of emotions on the parenting spectrum.

A specific emotion she can relate to personally is a popular one: guilt.

“[Parenting] changes you in every possible way, but there’s a struggle, there’s a conflict that exists, which is you also want to maintain this other part of your life,” the Divorce star told PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly Editorial Director Jess Cagle.

“The reason it’s a conflict, usually, is that you like the other life, too,” adds the actress, 51. “Someone [told me] that working mothers who work outside of home feel guilty about work because they like the work.”

From her turn as the iconic Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City to her newest role as protagonist Frances in the HBO dramedy DivorceSarah Jessica Parker has become a household name over the duration of her 30-plus-year career.

But before she hit the big time, the actress and mother of three had a humbling upbringing, far away from the limelight, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

“I think my mother is sorry that there were things she couldn’t give us, but I work hard to be as depriving to my children as my mother was … meaning I like to withhold things from my children,” Parker told PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly Editorial Director Jess Cagle of how her childhood has influenced how she and husband Matthew Broderick are raising their kids: 7-year-old twin daughters Tabitha and Loretta and son James, 13.

“Things they want, I think they should yearn for, and in some cases, as my son gets older, I think he should earn,” adds Parker, 51. “I think it’s good to pine for something so that when you get it, it has such meaning. You aren’t casual about the possession.”

Sarah Jessica Parker is officially the mother of not one, but two 7-year-olds.

The Divorce actress helped her twins Loretta and Tabitha celebrate their birthday on Wednesday with a sweet and sentimental Instagram post.

“Happy birthday to our lovely, funny, dear, surprising, sparkling and beloved Loretta and Tabitha who today are 7 years old,” Parker, 51, wrote of her daughters with husband Matthew Broderick. “Let the celebrations begin.”

In the accompanying image, the little ladies ran alongside each other in a grassy field.

From her starring role on Sex and the City and innate sense of style to launching her own shoe line, Sarah Jessica Parker is undeniably a fashion icon. But did she pass those genes on to her kids?

“They’re at an age — and have been for many years — where they really have their own identity,” Parker told PEOPLE of her children with Matthew Broderick (son James Wilkie, 12, and 5½-year-old twin daughters Tabitha and Loretta) at the Fendi New York flagship store launch Friday.

“So Sunday through Thursday, the rule is they can wear whatever they want,” Parker, 49, adds. “And if we go to the theater or to the ballet, I get a say. But it’s really among choices that they approve of.”

As for whether they inherited mom’s fashion sense, “It’s not something we talk about.”
