When it comes to parenting tasks, Jeremiah Brent admits that things just took a natural course for himself and husband Nate Berkus.

“It’s so funny because as a parent you kind of just fall into your roles,” the designer, 31, told The Awesome News about the couple’s experiences with 17-month-old daughter Poppy. “Nate loves to change a diaper more than anybody should because he knows he’s instantly solved something.

“I’m the one that’s up all night and in the morning because I need barely any sleep,” adds Brent, who will star with Berkus, 44, in their first-ever home-design show this fall on TLC called Married to Design: Nate & Jeremiah. “I’m much more emotional and sensitive, Nate’s goofy.”

“She picks the flamingo every time! I don’t know why, but she does.”

Inside Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent’s Nursery for Daughter Poppy

09/08/2015 at 05:25 PM ET

Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent have unveiled their biggest labor of love to date.

In the October issue of Architectural Digest, the couple share the nursery they designed for their 5-month-old daughter, Poppy, in the family’s new apartment in New York City. Even cuter: Poppy joined her proud dads for the cover shoot, showing the world just how much she’s grown since making her debut in PEOPLE in May.

“We knew we wanted to have a family and that we wanted to raise our child in New York,” Berkus, 43, tells the magazine. Adds Brent, “The day we closed on the apartment, we were walking through Washington Square, and I told Nate, ‘We have to treasure this.’ For two kids from Minnesota and California to be living in this apartment on lower Fifth? It’s insane. I always wanted to live beautifully, and the idea of Nate and Poppy and me creating a life here together…”

Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent Introduce Daughter Poppy

05/15/2015 at 06:55 PM ET

Less than a year after tying the knot in New York City, designers Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are taking on their most passionate project to date: fatherhood.

“I’ve always wanted to be a parent,” Berkus, 43, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I had hoped that I would have this chance, but I didn’t want to do it on my own.”

“Until recently, we didn’t think it was possible,” says Brent, 30. “But we’re fortunate to be legally married and things just fell into place. We’re really thankful.”

On March 23, the couple welcomed daughter Poppy Brent-Berkus. Surrounded by the surrogate’s family and their own, “everybody was hand in hand” for the birth, recalls Brent.

“Surrogacy can be about science, it can be about money, or it can be about intention,” adds Berkus. “We were really lucky to have everybody that was involved in allowing us to have our daughter be excited for us.”

With all his expertise in interior design, you’d think Nate Berkus would be itching to decorate his baby-on-the-way’s sleep space — and you’d be wrong!

“I’m Jewish, so we don’t decorate the nursery before the baby’s born,” Berkus, 43, told PEOPLE Thursday at the Unstopables home fragrance scent decor collection launch in New York City.

“It’s a superstition; it’s a cultural thing,” Berkus explains. “I think it means you’re tempting fate, so I’m not tempting anything: healthy baby, gorgeous nursery on the way. Knock on wood!”

In September, Berkus announced on Facebook that he and husband Jeremiah Brent were expecting their first child via surrogate this spring.
