McCarthy, 45, says she asked Georgette what she wanted for breakfast one morning and received a strange answer.

When Mom and Dad have both built their careers on being funny like comic actress Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone, it’s a safe bet their kids are going to grow up with a strong sense of humor.

But the couple points out that doesn’t always make things easy for parents who love a good joke when it comes to disciplining their quick-witted children.

“We have very funny kids,” McCathy told PEOPLE at the premiere of her new film The Boss, which she stars in as well as co-wrote and produced with her husband.

In an effort to help ensure her two daughters develop a healthy sense of self-esteem, Melissa McCarthy is focused on a seemingly small but difficult skill: learning how to graciously accept a compliment.

“A biggie for me is take the compliment,” McCarthy, who stars in the upcoming comedy The Boss, told reporters Wednesday at a press conference in Los Angeles.

“I’m hard on people for that. When you say like, ‘Oh, you look great,’ so many women for the next 20 minutes are like, ‘I got it on sale. It’s actually terrible — if I turn around you’d hate it. I’ve got one shorter leg…’ ”

She adds, “So as a rule, I’m always like, ‘You just basically shoved the compliment back in my face.’ ”

The actress and Falcone talked about their daughters Georgette, 5½, and Vivian, 8, when they appeared together Wednesday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“The 5-year-old is mellowing, but Georgie is a force of nature,” McCarthy told host Ellen DeGeneres.

“She’s trouble,” jokes Falcone.

“My daughters have their own sense of style, which is a thousand times better than having mine,” McCarthy tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story.

Georgette, 5½, and Vivian, 8, McCarthy’s daughters with husband Ben Falcone, are already setting their own trends.

“Georgie is very specific in what she wears,” McCarthy, 45, says. “Vivie can be more flexible, but she’s said to me on several occasions, ‘That’s my style, Mama.’ And I can tell when she wears something and feels good in it.”

Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock are not just costars, but friends who bonded over the anxieties of being moms with jobs outside the home.

“I don’t know if I feel like a bad mom, but at the end of the day I’m always plagued with: Did I do enough? Should I go in a different direction?” Bullock, mother of 3-year-old son Louis, tells Sunday’s Parade magazine. “But I also know that my entire life revolves around Louis.”

Adds McCarthy, who is mom to daughters Vivian, 6, and Georgette, 3: “It plagues me. I feel intensely guilty for working … You have to be able to provide for your kids. But I feel like it’s a weird modern phenomenon that you always feel guilty for it.”
