Emily Blunt: Parenting Is a ‘Fear-Based Industry’

12/18/2014 at 04:00 PM ET

Just because she’s a mom doesn’t mean she can’t work a crop top!

Emily Blunt, who gave birth to daughter Hazel in February, flaunts her tight tummy in a midriff and back-baring looks for the Dec. 18 issue of online magazine, The Edit.

In the high-fashion spread, the actress, 31, shares her laissez-faire approach to parenting.

“[Raising children] is such a fear-based industry,” Blunt says. “There used to be one book that everyone read, now there’s How to Raise a Gluten-free Baby, How to Raise a Scientific Baby … It’s insanity! So I haven’t read anything, I’m just letting her do her own thing.”

Emily Blunt‘s Into the Woods character’s biggest wish in life is to become a mom — and the actress happens to have some insight on the matter.

Speaking as a new parent herself, is motherhood all it’s cracked up to be?

“It is that and more,” Blunt told PEOPLE at the musical’s N.Y.C. premiere Monday night. “I know that everybody says that. Everybody says, ‘Oh it’s the best — it’s the best thing ever!’ “

Blunt, who welcomed daughter Hazel with husband John Krasinski in February, says she’s still getting accustomed to what being a mom to her 10-month-old means.

Although Emily Blunt likes to entertain audiences of all ages, the newest member of her family, Hazel may be the youngest.

“I like to sing old standards to my baby daughter,” Blunt, 31, told PEOPLE during IWC Schaffhausen’s celebration of its Portofino Midsize watch collection at W South Beach during Art Basel on Wednesday.

The British actress, who plays The Baker’s Wife in the upcoming film Into the Woods based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, is loyal to certain performers.

“Some of my favorites for Hazel include songs by Ella Fitzgerald and Otis Redding,” Blunt continues. “She seems to like them.”

But her 10-month-old baby girl isn’t her only fan: Blunt’s husband, John Krasinski, 35, hasn’t complained about the constant serenades which fill their California home.

Emily Blunt: How I Know My Daughter Is Cute

05/14/2014 at 11:55 AM ET

The pose Hazel struck in her first photo wasn’t an accident — according to Emily Blunt, her baby girl was born to be a star.

“She’s just stinking cute. She came out ready for a photo shoot,” the new mom joked during a Wednesday appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

And while the actress and husband John Krasinski‘s 3-month-old daughter  – whose name suits the couple’s love of “old lady names” — is “perfect,” the proud parents aren’t the only ones to take note.

“I remember when we were in the recovery room … and this nurse came in — her name was Mabel, another great old lady name. She had this fantastic, crazy weave and she said, ‘Damn, your baby is so cute!’ And I went, ‘Oh, thank you,” Blunt, 31, recalls.

“She went, ‘Damn, she’s awesome, she’s so cute.’ And I went, ‘Mabel, I think you say that to everyone,’ and she went, ‘No, I don’t … when I know a baby’s ugly, I say, “You had a baby!”‘ I was like, ‘Those poor parents must know.'”
