When Alison Sweeney’s kids open their lunch boxes, they never find greasy bags of chips or sugary cookies.

Instead, they’ve got good-for-you snacks like homemade trail mix and breakfast bars that The Biggest Loser host whips up in her Hollywood Hills kitchen. After years of struggling with her weight before finally getting healthy and fit, Sweeney has made following good nutrition principles a priority, not just for herself but for her husband Dave and their children, Ben, 9, and Megan, 5.

“My kids have known from the get-go that we all need to make healthy choices,” Sweeney tells PEOPLE. “They never expect to eat from the kids’ menu at a restaurant.” They don’t expect typical kid snacks at lunchtime either.

All the Details on Blue Ivy’s Adorable VMAs Dress

08/25/2014 at 01:45 PM ET

Blue Ivy Carter was a ray of sunlight that lit up her mother’s face at the VMAs on Sunday — and her gleaming gold dress didn’t hurt the effect, either.

The hue of the 2½-year-old’s frock picked up the glimmering mosaic pieces on Beyoncé‘s bodysuit as the singer accepted the Video Vanguard Award from her daughter and her husband, Jay Z.

The good news: We tracked down Blue’s dress. The metallic mini shift dress — complete with too-cute flutter sleeves — is from Bonpoint and retailed for around $350.

Before Beyoncé had a moment with her loved ones on stage, Kelly Rowland (and her bump!) ruled the red carpet.

The mom-to-be embraced her belly as she arrived to Sunday’s VMAs in a blush-colored Kaufmanfranco halter dress, which she accessorized with stunning interlocking earrings from Lorraine Schwartz and brown diamond bangles.

Rowland, 33, complemented her sparkly sequined ensemble with a braided updo and soft makeup, including a pretty pink lip.

We Tried It: Radio Flyer’s Build-a-Trike

We Tried It: Radio Flyer’s Build-a-Trike

Who tried it: Rennie Dyball, Senior Editor

Why she did it: Now that my daughter is 1, I thought it would be fun to let her branch out beyond her stroller and take a tricycle for a spin.

Pros: Our trike arrived during a particularly fussy period, so my husband and I both agreed that the grumpy one would probably be indifferent to her new wheels. Boy, were we wrong. She loved tooling around the apartment in her trike, pointing out the sights and ringing the little bell. We had fun customizing it for her, too. We included add-ons like a parent handle to push and steer, and a wraparound tray, seat pad and seat belt to make it safe and secure for such a little rider. The best part: The add-ons can all be removed as she gets older, making the Radio Flyer Build-a-Trike a good investment, suitable for ages 9 months to 5 years. You can even trick out your trike with multiple color and pattern options, and fancy upgrades like speakers, air tires, personalized license plate and a UV-blocking canopy.

Melissa Joan Hart Launches Cool Boys Collection

08/22/2014 at 12:30 PM ET

As a mom of three sons, Melissa Joan Hart knows her way around the boys department.

Her only problem? The selection of tees and denim duds that the actress wanted to add to Mason, 8½, Brady, 6, and 23-month-old Tucker‘s wardrobes weren’t available.

So Hart did the next best thing: She teamed up with husband Mark Wilkerson and together the couple created King of Harts, a surfer meets cool school boy collection of kiddie clothes.

Available in sizes 2 to 12, the line is full of bright tops, chambray shirts, vintage-inspired jean jackets and mix-and-match bottoms.

The Melissa & Joey star opened up to PEOPLE about everything from her new designer role, three of her favorite models (her boys!) and working with her husband.

We Tried It: Specialized Nursing Bras

We Tried It: Simple Wishes B3 All-in-One Bra

Who tried it: Rennie Dyball, Senior Editor

Why she did it: As a nursing and pumping mom, I’m always looking for products to make the multi-tasking easier. Plus, it’s National Breastfeeding Awareness month, so what better time?

Pros: This bra can be used for pumping and/or nursing, which makes it a great choice for working moms who would otherwise wear a nursing bra plus a pumping bustier to express milk away from home. And it could be the perfect solution for moms who nurse on one side and pump on the other. Wrangling a baby and pump parts can easily result in spilled milk, but this unique combo can hold a flange securely in place on one side while it fully clips down on the other. It’s also got plenty of closure options to accommodate a breastfeeding mom’s changing shape, and has a flattering fit. Plus the straps convert to racerback and halter styles.
