As a child, award-winning actress and author Julianne Moore may not have been a fan of her signature freckles and red hair, but little did she know they’d end up being the inspiration for her children’s book character, Freckleface Strawberry.

And now, the Game Change star has launched her second kid’s app called Freckleface Strawberry Dreamtime Playtime, which is based on Moore’s best-selling book series.

Designed for the iPad and iPhone, it’s a math-building skills game that lets kids count, sort, and match with Freckleface Strawberry herself.

“When I was developing the second app, I really wanted [to focus on] skills for children like counting, sorting and matching. Basic educational skills that can be put into a fun game for kids,” Moore told PEOPLE.

From family trips to the library to promoting literacy programs in schools, it’s no secret that Jennifer Garner is a big fan of instilling a love of books at an early age.

That’s why the mom-of-three is excited about the launch of little BLUEPRINT, a line of kid-friendly reads created by her good pal, Katherine Eskovitz.

“She was one of my first mom friends. Our kids went to preschool together,” Garner, 41, tells PEOPLE.

Eskovitz originally penned the stories — which are designed to help children cope with life challenges including divorce and death — for her own children.

However when Garner got wind of the project, she quickly put in an order for her little ones, including daughters Violet, 8, and Seraphina, 5 next month, and son Samuel, 22 months.

John Lithgow: My Grandchildren Adore My New Book

10/25/2013 at 04:00 PM ET

John Lithgow‘s Never Play Music Right Next to the Zoo may be his ninth children’s book, but it’s by far his favorite — and longest — adventure to date.

The story, which tells the tale of a concert group who set up shop next to a zoo full of curious critters that break free to get their hands (paws!) on the instruments, was originally a musical co-written by Lithgow nearly a decade ago.

“The words of this book are the narration of a musical suite I created with a wonderful composer named Bill Elliott. We’ve been performing it ever since,” the actor, who will hold a Celebrity Storyteller book signing on Saturday at McNally Jackson in New York City, tells PEOPLE.

See the Cover of Ricky Martin’s First Children’s Book

09/17/2013 at 02:00 PM ET

Ricky Martin can now add children’s book author to his resume. Three years after the release of his autobiography, the father-of-two shared news of his latest publishing project, Santiago the Dreamer in Land Among the Stars, on his WhoSay account Monday.

“Exciting news! Here is the cover of my 1st children’s book, out Nov. 14th,” Martin, 41, wrote.

The kid-friendly tale — which will also be available in Spanish — is about a young boy named Santiago, who struggles with self confidence after he doesn’t land the lead role in his school’s play. Heavily influenced by his own childhood, Martin hopes his book “inspires young readers to believe that dreams woven from their imaginations can become reality.”

On the same day, the ecstatic singer also gave fans a sneak peek of an uplifting quote from the book. “When you reach for the moon … sometimes you land among the stars.’ – Santiago The Dreamer,” he Tweeted.

One thing’s for sure: come November, we know what Martin will be reading to 5-year-old twins Valentino and Matteo at bedtime.
