Billions Star Malin Akerman on Keeping Her Focus on Son Sebastian: ‘I Can’t Breathe Without Him’

Malin Akerman‘s son Sebastian has one proud mom.

“I can’t breathe without him,” Akerman told PEOPLE of her son, who turned 3 in April, at the Women’s Health and The Feed Foundation 5th Annual “Party Under the Stars” event in Bridgehampton, New York, on Saturday.

“I feel like I just had him, and now he’s talking back to me. He’s my absolute.

“By 12 o’clock tonight, I’ll be missing him. He’s so much fun, he’s amazing,” continues the Billions actress, 38, describing the evening as a “mama’s night out.”

Akerman, who was wearing a Stella McCartney jumpsuit with a plunging neckline, went on to describe the 3-year-old’s current loves. “It’s trucks and garbage trucks,” she says of young Sebastian. “Which is great in New York City because there are lots of them. You hear them all the time.”

But her son’s interests don’t stop at the automotive — he’s also very musical.

“He’s been into violins the past year and a half, so I’m hoping that sticks,” Akerman admits. “He plays like a 3 year old would, as if he’s about to break the strings off, because he’s very rough. But he loves it. I just want him to have fun with it now.”

Meanwhile, the single mom tells PEOPLE she wouldn’t want friends to set her up on a date.

“I’m not really actively seeking. I’m just focusing on my son and work,” she says. “If somebody comes along, then, fantastic. And if not, fantastic.”

When asked, Akerman noted that she has a laissez-faire attitude toward willing these kinds of things into existence.

“I’m just inviting whatever is coming my way,” says Akerman. “I always feel like the more you try to control anything, the worse it gets. So I’m just going with the flow.”

But the actress was extremely selective, however, with her choice of the person who would pitch in to help care for her son.

“My nanny is my best girlfriend who I grew up with since we were 18,” she explains. “We moved out to L.A. together, but she ended up becoming a preschool teacher. She recently quit her job.

“And I just broached the question, ‘Would [you] be interested?’ And she said yes, so she’s been with us for a year and a half.”

Akerman shares that Lara Axelrod, her beloved character on Billions, is not much like herself.

“She’s very different than me because she’s very abrasive,” she admits. “I kill them with kindness. She kills them with … which is amazing, because I get to get s— out that I wouldn’t normally get out, and say things to people that I would never normally say to anyone. So it’s fun to live through her.”
