Josh Duhamel Is Ready to Be a Sports Dad After First Baseball Game with Son Axl
“I’ll be that guy probably coaching,” Duhamel, who plays the legendarily colorful ’70s-era Major League Baseball pitcher Bill “Spaceman” Lee in the upcoming film Spaceman, tells PEOPLE.
Although Axl is still a few years away from organized sports, the actor thinks he may have a soccer player in the making at home.
“Right now it’s soccer, but it could be baseball. Who knows?” says Duhamel, 43.

Prior to arriving at the premiere of his new film, Duhamel had spent a special day with the Los Angeles Dodgers with his pop-star wife Fergie and their son, where the actor got to throw out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium.
“It was a perfect day at the Dodgers game,” he says, noting that after first meeting Vin Scully, the venerable Dodgers announcer advised him not to throw from the pitcher’s mound.
“I couldn’t do that!” Duhamel says with a laugh. “Playing a pitcher in a baseball movie, you’ve got to throw it from the mound, right? We went down to the field and threw the ball — and I threw a strike, which was the best part!”
Sharing his first big baseball outing with Axl was special, Duhamel admits — for a unique reason.
“It was great because he didn’t care about any of it, other than he got to eat an entire Dodger Dog,” the actor jokes. “He literally ate up the whole hot dog. He never does that. So if he’s going to remember anything, he’s going to remember that.”
As a former football player, the All My Children alum is unsure if he wants his son to take up that particular full-contact sport.
“Whether or not he plays football, I’m not sure,” he says. “I played football, and my dad and Fergie’s dad all played football, but I don’t know, man. It’s a pretty brutal game.”
As an undergrad, Duhamel played quarterback for Minot State University in his home state of North Dakota, while Fergie’s father was a high school football coach (and she was a high school cheerleader).
“It makes life a lot easier when your wife is into sports,” the actor admits with a chuckle. “She’s not nearly as into them as I am, but she tolerates my love of sports. It’s a bit of an addiction.”
The couple also enjoy a bit of marital competition when it comes to their favorite teams.
“She’s a Dolphins fan and I’m a Vikings fan, but I’m NFC and she’s AFC so it’s amicable,” Duhamel says. “But intense — especially when they’re playing each other.”
