All the Details on Alex Murrel Johnson’s Beach-Themed Nursery for Son Levi

Life’s a beach for Alex Murrel Johnson‘s baby boy Levi William!

The former star of the hit series Laguna Beach didn’t wander far from her reality roots when it came to the design of her newborn son’s nursery. In fact, the serene side of the ocean is what drew her and husband Kyle Mark Johnson into the room’s theming the most.

“We really wanted the nursery to be subtle and understated with a cozy and welcoming feel,” Murrel Johnson, 29, tells PEOPLE exclusively of the inspiration behind her 6-day-old son‘s sleep space.

“I loved the way it turned out and can’t wait for him to start using it!” the new mom, who was known as “Alex M.” on Laguna Beach, added of the primarily blue-and-white room, which is complete with a few wild animal and rustic touches.

Levi’s boho-inspired room is perfect for the Newport Beach-based family, who live not far from where Murrel starred in Laguna Beach. The show helped the former reality star design the nursery, which ties in soft gray tones with blues and whites, in both solids and a variety of fun patterns.

Kyle’s favorite part of his new son’s room? The large ocean print, whose presence — and that of the various animal prints — were designed to decorate the walls that were left white to create the vision of a “blank canvas.”

“The different themes of bohemian, coastal, modern, and animal inspired intertwine to create a serene space for baby Levi,” according to a press release.

The couple opted for “modern white” furniture for a minimalist vibe, with baby bedding sets, crib skirt, crib sheet and faux fur baby blanket all from New Arrivals, Inc. The rustic ladder with baby clothes hanging casually from it is by Dot & Bo, while the rugs hail from Rugs USA.

And of course, no outdoor-inspired room would be complete without a splash of green.

“We love greenery for nurseries because they add a earthy feel and a pop of color,” the New Arrivals designer says. “The fig tree and succulents mixed with the decorative rustic ladder warm the space and create a cozy area.”

And Murrel Johnson did a little hometown shopping of her own to complete her son‘s room, which also includes an adventure-inspired bookshelf, Roman shades and floating wall shelves.

“The unique dark blue throw pillow found on the rocker was custom created from a piece of fabric Alex picked up at a flea market!” the designer adds.

Beautiful room! Love how a nursery looks so clean and perfect, until the toddler stage. Then the fun begins!
