Michael Phelps’ Son Boomer Joins His Olympian Father in the Pool for the First Time: ‘Can’t Wait to Learn to Swim!’

07/06/2016 at 08:15 PM ET

Michael Phelps may have a future Olympic swimmer on his hands.

The new dad was joined in the pool by his 9-week-old son Boomer for the first time, as seen in new Instagram photos Wednesday. The father-son duo enjoyed a relaxing day in their backyard, and little Boomer’s smile proves he’s already a natural in the water.

“The little man loved the water today!! @boomerrphelps and I got some extra laps in today!! #mpswim,” the proud papa, 31, shared in his latest Instagram photo.

In addition, Phelps’ fiancée Nicole Johnson also posted a pool shot, writing, “@boomerrphelps and I #relax while daddy @m_phelps00 works.”

And Boomer, who was born on May 5, even shared a family photo on his very own social media account.

“I loved going in the pool today with @nicole.m.johnson (mommy) and @m_phelps00 (daddy) today! Can’t wait til I get to learn to swim from daddy and @coach_bowman !” the caption read.

Though it was Boomer’s first time in the water, he’s already watched his famous dad dominate at work. In late June, Johnson and her son were in the audience when Phelps competed at the USA Swimming trials, where the most decorated Olympian of all time advanced to compete for the final qualifying round.

Phelps has said after this year’s Rio Olympics, he will be retiring from swimming. On July 1, the 18-time Olympic gold medalist took on rival Ryan Lochte for the last time on American soil at the Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.

“For me to be able have the Olympics, a wedding and having my firstborn be able to watch or be able to be there while I swim in my last Olympics is something that is absolutely special,” Phelps told Today‘s Matt Lauer.

His baby is cute.

He has his own instagram?

Here comes the boom on

Adorable baby, but strange name.

Omalz on

He is huge for only 8-weeks old.

It would be nice if the kid weren’t named after the family dog. The kid is smiling, People writers! That doesn’t mean he’s a natural in the water. Stop gushing like starstruck teenage girls. So, someone in this guy’s PR camp lied to Instagram so this kid could have his own social media account. The US Olympic committee has gone for the “flash” and “show” of having Michael Phelps go to the Olympics (something he’s done, been awarded for, and set records no one can touch) instead of some kid probably WAY more worthy of having an opportunity and a chance to compete. Kind of like Michelle Kwan being passed over for Nancy Kerrigan to go to the Olympics. She rightfully won (as I’m sure Michael Phelps did), but was passed over for Kerrigan to have her chance (which she’s had as did Phelps). But sure, send the foolish, drug addict who drives under the influence so he and Ryan “Look at Me!” Lochte can act like fools.

Awww, did you forget your meds today, Kathleen?

Love this story especially because its something positive. I’m really looking forward to watching the Summer Olympics. I just hope there are good ways for the competitors to guard themselves against he Zika virus, and all the other negative stuff that Rio is plagued with now.

@ Kathleen: Do you realize how hateful and snarky you sound?

That is one adorable baby boy!

Cute kiddo on

Love Michael Phelps! His little guy is adorable!! I’m a former swimmer and a HUGE fan of Phelps so I’m excited for the games to start. It will be neat to watch his final Olympics. It will be many, many years before someone will top his success. It may never happen. It wasn’t until 2008 that Phelps managed to beat Mark Spitz’s record of 7 gold medals in the 1972 Olympics. Go Michael!!!!

Kar on

@ Kathleen – please calm down. The pics are adorable and so is the baby🙂

@Kathleen. Lighten up, because you sound like a loon. If you don’t like the Olympics, then don’t watch. It’s that simple.

@ Kathleen – calm down, you comment is foolish.

I bet Boomer is a nick name. I do not like my first name, but, unfortunately our parents get to name us whatever they like. We are just stuck with it, until we decide to change, if we do???? He is a cute baby!!! I wish he and his parents much luck, happiness and a long happy life!!!

@Kathleen, you must be a miserable person to live with. What a hateful, rude, unnecessary post. You should really go back on your meds, crazy isn’t attractive. If Phelps was better than some unknown kid, then that’s just the way it is. You have to earn your spot. Any young kid who wants to become an Olympic swimmer of his caliber is going to have to deal with rejection. You don’t get the spot, simply because you haven’t won any Olympic medals yet and “deserve it.” They’re looking for the best, and Phelps has already proven he is. If someone else wants a spot over him, they’re going to have to prove they’re better than him. And, they didn’t. So, maybe you should go get a personal life or make your way back to the institution. Sit down and shut up.

yay the same name of my dog boomer

Former swimmer on

You are endangering the baby’s health (and yours) if that water is chlorinated. Do some research and be a voice for change in this country. Kids who look up to you are absorbing and breathing toxic chemicals several hours a day in practices and meets. Studies show the list of health risks are astounding and it’s not just “swimmer’s asthma.” There are better ways to treat water. You could truly make a difference. I pray you read this and consider the impact you could make. Do it for your son and all those swimmer kids.

Fantastic pictures.

I’m happy for Michael and his fiance but feel bad for the child being named Boomer. Really….? People should really think about giving children odd, strange names. In this time of bullying, you know he’ll be picked on because of his name. It’s sad for the child. None of my business, just an opinion.

von on

sounds more like a middle name
