Hillary Scott Opens Up About Miscarriage: There’s ‘Pressure’ to ‘Walk Through Life Like It Never Happened’

06/20/2016 at 01:45 PM ET

Hillary Scott is revealing the heartbreaking inspiration behind her single “Thy Will.”

“Last fall I went through a miscarriage,” Scott, 30, told Good Morning America through tears on Monday.

“This is something that is still not talked about very often,” says Scott, opening up for the first time about her experience. “I also feel like there’s this pressure that you’re just supposed to be able to snap your fingers and continue to walk through life like it never happened.”

But Scott, who recently recorded an album of hymns with her family, Love Remains, put pen to paper to help her persevere through her pain.

“I wrote this song in the middle of experiencing everything that comes with a miscarriage, so it was at my most raw place that I could have ever been when this song truly poured out of me.”

The singer and mom to daughter Eisele Kaye, who turns 3 next month, is also approaching motherhood with a new outlook.

“I’m a different mom to her now,” she says of Eisele. “I hug her a lot tighter.”

Scott is also focusing on music and looking forward to being back with her Lady Antebellum bandmates.

“After going through everything that I’ve gone through in the past year, but also just the process of making this record, I know I’m coming back into the mindset of Lady Antebellum,” she says of the band, which is playing various festival and fair dates this summer.

“Thy Will” is the first single off Love Remains, which is out July 29.

We lost our first child at 5 months. I was devastated. My husband and I had been trying for over 3 years to get pregnant. We lost our “Robin” on Halloween 1985. We did, though, have two subsequent births – but our first child is and always be with us forever. After 32 years, it still hurts, the pain will never go away. So, God Bless you Hillary and your husband.

Such a pretty song, I also lost a little one 16 years ago but I do have a 30 year old daughter that has given me two grandchildren that are my world! I still think of that baby and what life would be like if he/she was here but it was Gods will. We tried for years when to have another when our daughter turned three and we gave up only for it to happen when she was 13, we were still happy but it only lasted for twelve weeks. After all these years that baby is still in my heart but thank you Jesus for giving me my grandchildren because I never knew love like this before!!!

(Thy will) came out during the time we found out that we lost our little baby girl. I was devastated and couldn’t understand why God would give us such a beautiful gift and then take it away. I went to a very bad place for several months but your song helped bring me out and I just wanted to thank you. We have 1 child who is 6 and I now hold on even tighter to him and never take a second for granted.

My daughter and her husband had a son Canaan Joseph on July 30, 2016. He never got to take his first breath. Their hearts were broken. She was sitting in the doctors office for a routine checkup (by herself) it was to hear the heartbeat, to find out their was none. They did not want to know the gender, come to find the baby was a boy. We all went to the hospital to be with her and my son-in-law. This was absolutely the hardest thing I have ever been through as a mom. Having five daughters and seven grandchildren already, Canaan was my eighth. This tragedy has opened our eyes to the many parents that have lost a baby or child. My heart goes out to you and your family. Thank you for the beautiful song Thy Will Be Done.
