Jerry O’Connell on Life at Home with Twin Daughters: I’m ‘Outnumbered’ in the Mornings

06/16/2016 at 01:45 PM ET

Jerry O’Connell has his work cut out for him when wife Rebecca Romijn is away.

On Thursday’s episode of Live with Kelly, the 42-year-old actor dished on what it’s like to be a dad to 7-year-old twin daughters Dolly Rebecca Rose and Charlie Tamara Tulip when his wife of almost nine years is out of town.

“You don’t live with them, so you don’t know what they’re really like,” the Stand by Me star joked when Kelly Ripa commented on how his daughters have seemingly grown so quickly.

When asked if he feels outnumbered by all the women in his life, O’Connell says he only really does during the one-hour morning “rush” in his house when Romijn, 43, is away and the girls are trying to get ready for school.

“[When] my wife is out of town, I’m like, ‘Come on, go go go go go!’ ” he explains. “Hair for me is the toughest thing.”

O’Connell — who also hosts PEOPLE’s List, a new limited-run series whose next episode airs Saturday on ABC at 8 p.m. EST — shares that one of his daughters is a “tomboy” while the other is a “girly girl.”

“Obviously I want them to have long, beautiful hair and I get them extensions at the store,” he says, before clarifying for the laughing audience, “That’s a joke, everyone — I do not put extensions in my daughters’ hair. I just get them weaves.

“That’s a joke again, everyone, I’m kidding again,” he deadpans to more laughter from Ripa and the audience.

Fortunately for his daughters, O’Connell is a good sport who’s willing to do what it takes to make them happy.

“[With hair] is the only time I feel outnumbered. It’s like, ‘Dad, you’re doing it wrong – do a French braid!’ ” he continues. “So I have to watch YouTube tutorials and stuff.”

He’s a delight! His stories about the girls are just enough to give us info, but not enough to annoy them, or share too much!! I also love that they are apparently allowed to eat fast food, as evidenced by the box in the back seat of the car!!

I’ve always rooted for him to be co-host. Even the first time around…he was my choice!

I love that his girls look NORMAL! Happy and having a McDonalds treat with dad – NORMAL! They aren’t in designer clothes with perfect hair and striking a pose. Good for you guys. Twins but allowing them to be individuals and express themselves.

I bet it’d be hard them on to have to move to NYC if he did get the job. But he’d be so great at it. He’s funny and snarky, but kind and down to earth, too.

Please, they have a couple nannies who do the girls’ hair. Who is he kidding ? We’ve seen pictures of the nannies

Pretty girls! Not surprising, of course; look at their parents.

So good to see his kids growing up normal and happy, not like other kids look like entitled, kudos to the family.

Cute kids! But if a nanny is fixing their hair, they need to hire a new one. Their hair looks like the kids did it themselves!
