Why Laura Linney Kept Pregnancy at 49 Under Wraps: ‘I Wanted to Make Sure That My Child Actually Arrived’

06/03/2016 at 12:30 PM ET

It’s been almost two and a half years since Laura Linney gave birth to son Bennett Armistead, and now she’s opening up as to why she kept her pregnancy under wraps.

“You were on our show and pregnant, and we didn’t even know!” Kelly Ripa told the actress on Friday’s episode of Live with Kelly.

“Well, I was an older mother-to-be, and it had taken me a very long time to have a child,” replies the Love Actually star, who is now 52. “I wanted to make sure that my child actually arrived, and was safe and healthy.

“I just was very quiet about it — I didn’t hide it intentionally, I just didn’t advertise it,” she adds. “So it was the right thing for me and my family.”

Bennett is the only child for Linney, who married husband Marc Schauer in 2009. And Ripa’s husband, Mark Consuelos — as her co-host Friday — had a few questions of his own for the John Adams star.

“But at a certain point, it’s hard not to advertise it, right?” he asks.

“No, I was going to the theater when I was eight months pregnant, no one said a thing,” the four-time Emmy-winning actress explains. “I mean, I wasn’t hiding!”

She continues, “Then when I actually had the baby, this big deal was made about, ‘She was secret, secret, secret!’ I just didn’t [hold up] a sign that said, ‘Hi, I’m pregnant now.’ ”

Bennett is doing “great” today, according to his mom. And even though no one really picked up on the fact that Linney was expecting at the time, she wasn’t immune to the infamous pregnancy symptoms.

“I vomited a lot,” she admits with a laugh. “A lot.”

Well we as the public don’t need to know everything. Good for her for being able to keep something so special quiet. People may have been critical about her age anyway. I would have kept quiet too.

She is a wonderful actress and has the right to her private life. She managed to avoid all the negative comments about having a baby at a late age, because she didn’t really show it. Good for her that everything worked out well and she has a healthy baby boy.

I’ve seen them in Telluride a couple of times. Bennett is ADORABLE.

I really like her as an actress and she comes off as a grounded person. I had my baby late also and I was protective until she arrived for similar reasons ( I wanted to make sure we were medically safe and I could hold the pregnancy). Wishing her and her family happiness.

Awesome story! Good for her doing the best thing for her family. Made my day!

Kudos to her!!! Certainly would not want to start a family at 49 years old and a toddler to chase after @ 51 years old. She is old enough to be the “Grandma” instead of “Mom”.

Love, love her! She is such a good actress! So happy for her & her family!

@Karen: 51 is very young to be a grandma! Not everyone wants to start breeding practically out of high school. Lots of us like to go to college, work, travel, save etc.

Bravo to Ms. Linney for keeping her private life PRIVATE! I had always thought she would make a great mom. She has this warm, maternal aura about her. I also didn’t know at first that his middle name came from author (and close friend) Armistead Maupin. She did star in the Tales of the City miniseries.

She is so grounded as an actress, happy for her.
