Haylie Duff on Daughter Ryan Turning 1: ‘It’s Great and Sad All at the Same Time’
Haylie Duff is one proud mama.
When it comes to daughter Ryan Ava‘s first birthday, the Real Girl’s Kitchen star is feeling nostalgic.
“To be honest, I’m a really emotional mom,” Duff, 31, told PEOPLE exclusively at the Pier 1 Imports Outdoor Summer Preview Al Fresco event in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
“I’ve been updating the baby book, which I’ve been bad about doing because I just put it off for so long. I opened it and was like, ‘Oh, so I haven’t updated this since month two.’ I’ve been catching up a lot and looking back on a lot of things and it just goes by really fast.”

The first-time mom adds, “I’m also emotional about it because I feel like there’s pressure to have another one soon and that really scares me too. I’m not ready for that! It’s bittersweet. It’s so awesome to see them grow up and get these awesome little personalities, but then your baby is going away. It’s great and sad all at the same time.”
“I think just learning love on a whole different level, learning your capacity to love,” she says. “I think I hoped that I was going to be a good mom, but I didn’t think I was aware of how much I was going to care. That was something that really surprised me and how much you can accomplish in one day. All moms, whether you’re a mom of multiple kids, a stay-at-home mom or you’re a mom that works, you accomplish [so much] in one day. It’s crazy.”
Baby Ryan has also inspired decorative change, as well.
“I was very excited to partner with Pier 1 because I was so inspired by what they were doing with this outdoor collection,” Duff explains. “It’s so colorful. So much of my color palette with Real Girl’s Kitchen has been very neutral and then having a daughter this past year, I feel like I’ve really embraced color a lot.”
