Congratulations to mama-to-be Audra McDonald and her husband Will Swenson.

The former Private Practice star announced her happy news Tuesday, joking that her current fancy footwork in Broadway’s Shuffle Along may have helped seal the deal.

“Who knew that tap dancing during perimenopause could lead to pregnancy?” McDonald said in a statement she also tweeted. “Will and I are completely surprised — and elated — to be expecting a new addition to our family.”

As a result, the six-time Tony winner announced she will postpone her West End debut this summer in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill  and instead begin her maternity leave on July 24.

“I am so very grateful to everyone in New York and London for allowing me to rearrange my schedule to accommodate this little miracle,” McDonald said in the statement.

“While I’m disappointed I have to postpone my West End debut in Lady Day, I’m glad I’ll be able to spend a little more time in Shuffle Along this summer and will look forward to setting up a 1920s-themed nursery in my dressing room when I return to the show.”

McDonald, 45, is already mom to daughter, Zoe Madeline, 15, and Broadway star Swenson, 42, is father to two sons, Bridger, 15, and Sawyer, 12, from their previous marriages. The happy couple tied the knot in 2012.

Congratulations! Happy surprises are the best kind! Many perimenopausal women just felt the pit of their womb drop!

Congratulations for real. I had a baby at 40 and 43. NO FERTILITY TREATMENT!! That I was done. I already had two. My husband still laughs about it. Do not buy into the statistics crap. After the last two, I took no more chances😜 I thought I was going through peri menopause too!

Wow! This is the best news I’ve hear all day… I’m ecstatic for her and her family… Evolution is changing little by little. Take care of yourself and remember you’ve done this before and will be able to do it again… Congrats, Sweety.

Well, those are the BEST kind of surprises! Congratulations to the happy couple.

Yay! Congrats.

Probably one of those women who stop taking birth control in their 40’s assuming they can’t get pregnant.

If she was 55 then I’d say yeah, it’s a surprise …under 50 it’s average every day stuff…only idiot doctors say otherwise.

MANY women get pregnant in their mid to late 40’s! They are called “surprise” babies. My friend’s mom got pregnant at 50!!! Had to dye her hair so she didn’t look like a pregnant grandma! It DOES happen which is why gyno’s tell women to be careful and still use birth control OR better yet, have your hubby get snipped

So happy for them! And reading such positive and sweet comments below makes me even happier :)))

Come on now. Penis of fertile man penetrates ovulating woman who is not using any birth control. Surprise? I think not. But anyway, congrats to them.

Wow, all nice comments!!! 💕Reading them made my day. Kindness is underrated. I’m 39 and expecting my 4th and it’s nice to read about women in their 40’s still having wonderful albeit unexpected births(:

Congrats to them since they are happy about it! I’ve seen a few oops babies and some are thrilled and some are kinda ticked. LOL For me, when I was 48 and the Doc told me my test results showed that no way no how could I ever get pregnant again I was numb for a bit then elated. Happiest day ever. LOL It’s so freeing to not have to even think about that anymore!

I’ve loved reading all of these comments. Especially the stories about getting pregnant in your thirties and forties. I’m only in my mid thirties but I was beginning to think I wouldn’t have children unless I used my savings to freeze my eggs (I’m single). You ladies give me hope.

Yay for them! I hope she has a healthy, uneventful pregnancy.

Congratulations! Very happy news!!!

It amazes me that women (seemingly) do not know the difference between PERImenopause and menopause. PERImenopause is the time period LEADING to menopause (12 consecutive months without a period, and can be confirmed with a blood test). So, until that point, a woman can still become pregnant…and expect to still be ovulating.

It is amazing how every celebrity who is pregnant and in their mid forties is completely surprised by getting pregnant so late in their reproductive life. The chance that all of these women are getting pregnant without ART and donor eggs is almost zero.

I hope younger women aren’t fooled by this into thinking that they can delay pregnancy until their late 30s and early 40s. Yes, of course many women have robust fertility at this age. But many more do not. It would be awful to find out too late that you are not one of the lucky ones.
