Carrie Underwood on Her ‘Little Sponge’ Isaiah: ‘He’s Growing and Learning Every Day’

04/10/2016 at 11:15 AM ET

Carrie Underwood has a lot to be thankful for, and her son Isaiah tops the list.

“He’s the best thing,” she told PEOPLE at the 22nd Annual Muhammad Ali Celebrity Fight Night in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday. “I never really knew what it was like to love something or someone unconditionally until I had him.”

The “Church Bells” singer added, “He’s so sweet and so smart. He’s a little sponge just growing and learning every day. He’s just the best thing.”

Underwood, who welcomed her 13-month-old son with Nashville Predators star Mike Fisher last February, admitted that the little one — who “climbs all over everything” nowadays — is at the stage where he repeats everything.

“He’ll hear you say something and then he’ll mock you,” Underwood, 33, said of her son’s imitations. “Right now he walks around the bus and he’s like ‘OK, OK.’ It’s adorable.”

The American Idol alum, who wed Fisher in 2010, said that though having a baby hasn’t entirely changed their marriage, it has forced them to become more aware of the time they do get to spend together.

“Sometimes you have to make more of an effort to be with each other because it’s really easy to put all of your time and energy into your baby,” explained Underwood. “It’s been — not challenging, but just something that we’ve really just trying to be mindful of and try to make time for each other. We’re planning a vacation right now — we need it!”

She is so annoying. She thinks she is so perfect. It seems like deep inside she is so miserable.
I don’t think I have ever seen her laugh. She is fake too. Tons of false eyelashes, tons of eye shadow, extensions. She is just irritating.

Kelly, obviously you have not met Carrie. I have met her at meet & greets 4 times and each time she is so sweet and kind. I have seen her interact with children in wheelchairs, make a wish children and many more and she could not have been kinder. She prays with them and cries with them. That is very rare. There is nothing fake about this girl who has maintained her morals and down to earth values over the years and helps out in so many charitable ways. Maybe you should take a leaf out of her life’s book and be a little kinder and help someone along the way and just maybe you will be happier and find less fault with people you have never met. As for her make up—it is STAGE makeup as all performers wear.

I think Carrie Underwood is one of the most decent celebrities out there. Yes, she wears more make up than she used to, and yes, she is extremely popular, but I think that she is still a down to earth, sincere nice person.
I disagree with you, Kelly, that she’s probably miserable. I think she is very happy.

Carrie seems to put more effort into her looks than her child.

Lisa, you took the words right out of my mouth to Kelly. Thanks for sharing.

Lisa maybe you should stop judging me. Maybe just maybe I have done more charitable work than Carrie so zip your mouth. I’m glad she helps our children. No one said a thing about that! I said she was fake and inside miserable. Nothing about children. So check what you say and how YOU judged me! You hypocrite!

Kelly, you sure know a lot about Carrie. I am guessing you must have went to high school together, college or be fellow hockey wives or know her some other way to be able to make those comments. Certainly you can’t be making those judgements off of what you see on television, concert and the radio. I mean c’mon, I have seen her laugh on tv and I have met her in person as well.
