Mario Lopez on His Daughter Getting a Phone for Christmas: I Didn’t Have One Until My ‘Late 20s’

01/26/2016 at 03:00 PM ET

The holidays may have come and gone, but Ellen DeGeneres is still all about giving her audience the gift of a good view.

On Tuesday’s epside of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, DeGeneres shared a snapshot of guest Mario Lopez on Christmas Eve — wearing nothing but underwear.

“My wife is so shady — I was putting presents out before Santa came the next day and she took a picture. I kick it in my underwear!” Lopez, 42, explains.

Although the dad of two can be seen holding a large wrapped box — a building set for his son — the Extra host admits at the top of 2-year-old Nico‘s wish list was a light saber.

“He was all fired up about getting a light saber. That was his big deal,” says Lopez. “We had light saber fights … I love getting to be a kid again and having this whole Star Wars experience again.”

But it was daughter Gia Francesca‘s present that threw Lopez for a loop. “She wanted an iPhone — not that she’s making a lot of calls,” he shares. “I didn’t even have a phone until my late 20s, here she is at 5 years old.”

He adds, “She plays games on it, there’s some cool little learning games, and she FaceTimes either my mom or her cousins.”

The sibling set are also busy learning Spanish. “My son sounds like he’s from San Antonio, Texas, because he speaks Spanglish,” Lopez explains. “He’ll speak half and half. He’s like, ‘Daddy, where’s my zapatos?’ ”

And while Gia’s Spanish “is a little better,” the proud dad admits she’s also mastered another language. “She sounds like a little teenager from the valley ,” he jokes. “It’s funny how quick they grow.”

Although his kids are getting big, Lopez says wife Courtney is “on board” with having another baby.

“We’re going for number three, hopefully we’ll get blessed,” Lopez reveals. “We gotta have a tie breaker — girl or boy.”

They bought a 5 year old a cell phone? That is absolutely ridiculous! I don’t allow my kids to have cell phones until they are 12 and are allowed to stay home alone and are out by themselves more often.

Why does a 5 year old need an iphone? Do people not realize what is out there online for kids these days?

I think there’s no problem with a cell phone at 5 years old. It’s not like she’s calling anyone but family. What’s the big deal? She uses it for FaceTime and games. Not any different than a tablet really.

those kids got ripped off-I don’t see any dimples!

I’m pretty sure they’re keeping a close eye on her.

Wow! I try REALLY hard to remember that everyone parents differently and that in Hollywood, things are even more different. But I’m sorry. Giving a FIVE YEAR OLD a cell phone is absolutely insane! There is NO reason for a child that age to need a phone. I mean, what does she get for Christmas when she’s eight? Her own private jet?

Very cute family!

But nowadays I can’t really agree with people like Mario who say “it’s funny how quick they grow.” When you give a 5 year old a cell phone, I feel like you’re kind of speeding the process along. And it’s not so much the fact that it’s a phone, more of how early children are introduced to the Internet (the good and the bad) and what phones can do now that wouldn’t be bad for children to learn about much later.

Kids these days, smh. I’m 22 and just got my first-ever iPhone for Christmas. As a kid, I was happy with my ancient hand-me-down Nokia. And no, we’re not a broke family. We just have our priorities straight.

He bought cell phone for his 5 years old, that’s too young of age.

While I feel he’s sort of slutty and sleazy, god damn that picture is HOT🔥

My 13yr old isn’t allowed to have a smart phone yet. I feel it’s too young.
