Kelly Clarkson‘s new music video hits close to home.

In “Piece by Piece,” the third single from her seventh album of the same name, Clarkson touches on the emotional damage caused by her relationship with her father — and how her husband, Brandon Blackstock, turned it around.

“All I remember is your back,” Clarkson, 33, sings in the stunning black-and-white clip, which features a sweet moment with the couple’s daughter, River Rose, 17 months. “Walking towards the airport, leaving us all in your past. I traveled 1,500 miles to see you. Begged you to want me, but you didn’t want to.”

She continues, “But piece by piece, he collected me up off the ground, where you abandoned things. Piece by piece, he filled the holes that you burned in me at six years old.”

Clarkson has been candid about how her father was absent following her parents’ divorce when she was 5 years old. Looking back, Clarkson sees how fortunate she was to meet someone like Blackstock.

“I was talking to my sister on the phone about how sometimes girls with daddy issues don’t find men like that!” she told Glamour in March. “You find men who are all you knew, and I just feel so lucky. Maybe it’s because I waited and worked through my 20s.”

The most emotional part of the tune comes near the end of Clarkson’s chorus: “Piece by piece, he restored my faith that a man can be kind and a father could stay,” she sings of her and Blackstock’s journey into parenthood. The couple welcomed daughter┬áRiver in June 2014. Now, they’re set to add on to their family, which includes his children Seth and Savannah from a previous relationship, when Clarkson gives birth to a boy.

The American Idol champ announced her pregnancy during a performance of “Piece by Piece” at her Los Angeles concert in August.

“I couldn’t get through it and I was crying so hard and I thought, ‘These people are going to think I’m on drugs, but I’m about to lose it like a crazy person,’ ” she said in a revealing interview on CBS This Morning on Wednesday. “I was like, ‘Oh, I gotta explain.’ And then it just came out.”

She also shared her struggle with morning sickness, telling CBS’ Gayle King, “I have to get IVs and fluids because I get so dehydrated. It’s really bad.”

absolutely beautiful! It is SO true- the damage a father leaving does to a family. ALL these couples giving up and divorcing like no big thing- the kids will never be the same. Many end up in therapy. Girls NEED their daddy’s just like boy do. I’m sure this hits home for many!!!
As women we need to build each other UP – and support one another. Too often- the little green MONSTER of jealousy intervenes and shows it’s nasty self.

River Rose is adorable! Kelly writes such amazing, meaningful songs, so personal yet still relatable. She wrote Because of You about her mother, sad to think that both of her parents let her down. But she’ll be the best mom. Great song!
