Baby Girl on the Way for Christine Lakin

11/17/2015 at 12:15 PM ET

Christine Lakin is expanding her family — Step By Step.

The actress, best known for playing Al Lambert on the classic sitcom, is expecting a baby — a girl! — in March, her rep confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

This will be the first child for Lakin and her husband, actor Brandon Breault, whom she married in October 2014.

“We feel so lucky to bring a child into the world and look forward to raising her with love, laughter and compassion, in a time when these things seem challenged,” the actress tells PEOPLE.

Lakin, 36, has kept busy since her Step By Step days: She can currently be seen in HBO’s The Leisure Class and has a recurring role as the voice of news anchor Joyce Kinney on Family Guy. She was also featured in Garry Marshall‘s Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve and will be seen in his Mother’s Day in spring 2016 — right around her own debut as a mom!

Additionally, Lakin joined the cast of the short-lived musical adaptation of The O.C. in August, playing alcoholic mom Kirsten Cohen. The couple also costar in the independent feature The Ledger, which will be released in 2016.
