Life is pretty great for Carey Mulligan: She’s a new mom!

The Suffragette actress and her husband, Mumford & Sons’ frontman Marcus Mumford, welcomed their first child, daughter Evelyn Grace, on Monday, Sept. 15, PEOPLE has confirmed.

“Carey has given birth to a healthy and happy baby,” a source says. “She is just enjoying this time with her family and close friends.”

On Friday, Mulligan, 30, shared a few details on The Graham Norton Show: “It is a girl and she’s 3 weeks old.” On Monday, the new mom revealed her daughter‘s name to Entertainment Tonight: Evelyn. “No makeup, no piercings, no tattoos,” she joked of the life lessons she plans to impart.

The mom-to-be managed to keep her growing baby bump mostly under wraps in a structured gown while arriving to the Tony Awards back in June, where she was nominated for best performance by an actress in a leading role in a play for Skylight.

And while the notoriously private couple — who wed on a farm in Somerset, England, in 2012 — have yet to comment on their happy news, Mulligan’s pal Sienna Miller admitted to Vogue in May that she was looking forward to her friends starting a family.

“They have chickens and a dog, and roasts and friends, jams by campfires. It’s sort of idyllic. Marcus can headline Glastonbury and Carey can be nominated for however many Oscars, and then they come back to their farm, and they’re in big woolly jumpers and funny hats, raising piglets,” Miller said.

“It’s an amazing balance they’ve managed to strike. I can’t wait for a little baby to come along.”

Mulligan most recently starred in Refinery29’s The Walker, while Mumford, 28, returns to the road in November with his band.

Love him, love her! Congratulations!

I guess that maroon dress did show it, but people weren’t paying enough attention or something. Congratulations to them!

Ok, so how does the People ‘love it or list it’ ‘last night’s look’ have Carey Mulligan included looking not pregnant at all?

Mia on

Congratulations to both! Famous people managing to keep things under wraps. And they are both a big deal!
Now these are artists that want and value their privacy, not those that like the publicity game but moan when it doesn’t suit them. Yes I am looking at you Edward Cullen.

Mia- It’s hardly uncommon for a young, “new” celebrity to enjoy the attention they get at first and then realize (once they’re a bit more mature) that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be! That doesn’t make them moaners or whiners.

That being said, I am 1000 percent with you in that I like seeing big celebs putting their family before their fame! 🙂

Oh, and congrats to them!

@Mia – I couldn’t have said it better myself. I have so much respect for famous couples who chose to keep their personal lives private. It’s what true professionals should do.

the name is kind of boring, but at least it’s not Rocket Launcher, Cub Reporter, Blue Bear, or Pilot Inspecktor….

This couple is British, and names are usually chosen with the idea that since the child will assumably grow up and be an adult for most of their life, therefore they need a name not only suitable for adulthood, but one that has meaning or a connection to the family some way. They chose a lovely name, and one that will stand the test of time. Congratulations to the happy family!
