Nicole Richie on Supporting Working Moms: It’s ‘Comforting’ for Women to Hear It’s Hard
Nicole Richie isn’t sugarcoating the struggle of working moms.
“Saying that it is difficult sometimes is very comforting for other women to hear — just knowing that it is a juggle,” the mom of two told PEOPLE at the LEGO Dimensions launch party in New York City on Saturday.
Richie — mom to son Sparrow James Midnight, 6, and daughter Harlow Winter Kate, 7½ — spent a “very mellow” 34th birthday celebration with family and friends. But that’s a far cry from her usual day-to-day balancing act.
“It’s just about doing what you can, finding the balance in your own life,” she explains. “Every family is different, every household is set up differently and it’s just a constant game of prioritizing — it’s like a puzzle every day.”

But the fashion designer’s puzzle pieces seem to be fitting: Her Father, Lionel Richie, 66, recently told PEOPLE that his daughter and her husband, Joel Madden, 36, are “so happy” together in their new home.
But since moving into their new place, Richie jokes she’s closed the doors on expanding the family‘s brood of furry friends.
After she got stuck taking care of turtles for her Ninja-turtle obsessed son, she says, “I’ve put a strong limit — there’s no more pets coming into my house right now.”
