Inside Savannah Guthrie’s ‘Neutral’ Nursery for Daughter Vale: ‘It’s the Happiest Room’

08/19/2015 at 11:30 AM ET

The first thing Savannah Guthrie does after co-anchoring NBC’s Today show is run home to her daughter Vale.

“On an average day, I can be home by lunch time and then it’s Vale and me all afternoon,” the journalist, 43, tells PEOPLE of her first child with husband Michael Feldman. “We play for a couple of hours and then we take our naps together!”

Playtime (and naptime) take place in the 1-year-old’s animal-themed nursery, which Guthrie calls “the happiest room in the house.”

“We were going for the neutral look because I didn’t know if I was having a boy or a girl,” she says. “And since she’s come along, we’ve added the color.”

One of the most crucial elements of the nursery in their New York City apartment is the Restoration Hardware Baby & Child day bed.

“When she was really little and waking up five times a night, you could be right in there sleeping with her,” Guthrie explains. “Now it sort of doubles as a changing table or something for her to fall off of.”

But Guthrie’s favorite spot in the room is the glider chair, where the mommy-daughter duo read together and where Vale gets her bottle.

“She puts her little head on my shoulder because she’s tired and she knows the day is over. It’s the sweetest,” the first-time mom shares.

“I feel like the most blessed person in the universe just to sit there and hold her. It’s that moment of perspective and rest and peace and gratitude.”

She is so old to be a first time mom, I can’t imagine having an infant in my mid 40s

Daisy on

I don’t see anything wrong with it. She doesn’t look old and her baby is healthy.

The story isn’t about you Anna. Didn’t your “young” mom teach you “if you don’t have anything nice to say…..”?

Vale is so cute!! She looks just like Savannah’s husband, too! I think Savannah looks younger since she’s had the baby, too… happy for them!

Lisa on

She seems very happy and THAT is what matter most.

That precious baby is a chunk! She will lose all that baby weight, when she starts walking… I love chubby
babies!!! She has a wonderful mother I’m sure. Some
things you cherish more at an older age.

LIN on

She sounds like an awesome mom. She looks like she is genuinely happy.

A bottle??? That baby should be nursing! She should be ashamed….La leche league will be all over that one.,,

Whatever…there is nothing wrong with her being an older mom. Her job is flexible, and she appears to be doing just fine. Older women are generally more settled and secure and less uptight than they are in their 20s, and that type of perspective can be healthy for a child, especially a girl.

That’s none of your business. Maybe it’s to old for you but she’s really happy.

I was two months shy of 45 when my son was born 24 years ago. I was a much more stable and patient person than I was had I had him 20 years earlier. The downside is that I probably will not have as many years to spend with him or prospective grandchildren, however aside from that I really wouldn’t change a thing.

Adorable and happy looking baby!

I don’t think any babies are ugly, but that one’s kind of homely.

I was the surprise baby that couldn’t happen when my mother got pregnant at 38 after adopting 2. My father was 48. Even though now (I’m 28) they are much older parents, they will be the first to tell you that I have kept them young. I never missed out on anything as a child because of their age. It’s her life and her child; she seems like an amazing mother and that is all that matters. Age is a number.

Why do all these celebs who do a “neutral” theme do browns and creams? Yellow is neutral, so are pastel greens, orange and peaches. The rooms never look child friendly and fun if they have animals they are big fabricate ones that they cant play with. No colourful engaging rug or wall decor thats very good for development etc.. just boring
