Jaime King: Why I Chose Taylor Swift to Be My Baby’s Godmother

05/17/2015 at 04:00 PM ET

There’s a lot that comes with having a baby, but choosing a godparent is a high priority for Jaime King.

“You know it doesn’t matter where you come from or who you are or what you do,” King, 36, told PEOPLE at the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund‘s 2nd Annual Super Saturday L.A. event, sponsored by FIJI Water, on Saturday. “For me, choosing a godparent is a very sacred experience.”

The Hart of Dixie star, there to support the OCRF and Mary Kay Cosmetics, made the announcement via Instagram in March that she’d chosen singer and BFF Taylor Swift as godmother to her second child with husband Kyle Newman.

King, already mother to James Knight, 19 months (whose godmother is Jessica Alba), knows her best friend will be nothing short of extraordinary at the job.

“She’s going to be, like, the best godmother in the whole world,” King said. “The best.”

In fact, despite the fact that she just kicked off her 1989 World Tour, Swift is taking her godmother duties to heart, making it a point to pay King and her baby-to-be frequent visits.

“I was having my doctor check-up the other night and she came to visit and the baby was kicking for her,” King said. “It was so exciting and fun and sweet. She’s just fantastic.”

But that’s not the only reason she chose Swift for the gig.

“It wasn’t because it was this person and the name. It was really because of her morals and her values, the way that she treats people and how hard-working she is … her family and how close she is to them,” King explained.”I see what she gives out there to her fans and to her family. That’s the kind of person I want to be the guide and the spiritual protector of my child.”

King is bang on in the last paragraph describing Swift. Taylor is a very decent, moral and wonderful person in spite of all her fame. She indeed could not choose better for her child.

By the way, is this the same Jaime King who starred in Bulletproof Monk? I keep looking at her and looking at her and I think I see it but I’m not sure. Liked that movie a lot.

How many times is she going explain why she chose Taylor to be her godmother?

Yep, it’s the same Jamie King in bulletproof monk.

Why is a 36 year old best friends with a 25 year old

@ Frank I completely agree.

Thanks, JOY!

@Frank @Stephanie Maturity may have something to do with it. Not all young people are self-centered and uneducated. Some have a greater outlook on life than their elders. Remember, age is just a number 🙂

I thought Taylor Swift was Methodist. Aren’t Godparent’s solely among practicing Catholics? I know that my best friend (who is Catholic) really wanted me to be her second daughter’s Godmother but the church wouldn’t let me unless I converted. Is that how it is with most churches?

@Sara J. A lot of churches don’t care. I’m not religious at all (not anti-religion though) but my best friend and her husband chose me to be the godmother to their first child. They had the traditional Catholic ceremony, which I participated in, and even though I’m not a religious person, I promised to guide my goddaughter and protect her and help her to be a good, kind, and giving person when she’s older. To me, it has very little to do with religion, despite the name. My twin sister and her husband (who are not at all religious) are about to have their first child and my fiancé (who is not religious either) and I will be the godparents to this child as well.

@Frank
Why do you care? Last time I checked there aren’t age limits on friendships.

lala- This is actually the first time she’s spoken in depth about it. It’s just being reported by lots of different media, making it SEEM as though she’s talking about it over and over and over!

Anyway, I like her reasoning, but I don’t like this comment of hers: “She’s going to be, like, the best godmother in the whole world. The best.” What a slap in the face to Jessica Alba (her son’s godmother)!

BTW, I find it rather funny that she looks more pregnant in the instagram pic from three months ago than she does in the current pic!

Her BFF?? These celebs are so quick to call each other best friends. I bet they’ve known each other 2 yrs tops! I see pics of Jaime King hanging with Taylor and the 25 and younger crew, which is weird.
Do she and her husband not have any other married friends or childhood friends?? geez
