Zoë Saldana: My Body Was ‘Really Bent Out of Shape’ After Giving Birth

04/10/2015 at 04:00 PM ET

This mom isn’t taking no for an answer.

On Friday, Zoë Saldana posted a photo on her Facebook page showing her working up a sweat on a treadmill.

She accompanied the photo, in which she sports a red T-shirt and colorful leggings, with a lengthy description of her journey to reclaim her body after giving birth to twin boys Cy Aridio and Bowie Ezio in November.

“Your body changes dramatically, inside and out. You grow in places you never knew you could, and you are tired beyond belief. In some cases more than others, your body experiences a kind of trauma through childbirth that is difficult to explain unless you’ve had that experience,” the Guardians of the Galaxy star, 36, writes.

“My case was like that, everything from my thyroid to my platelets crashed. Thank God, we are all doing great now, but my body was really bent out of shape after the boys were born.”

She describes her determination to get her energy back and “find balance” for her body, no matter the difficulties and frustration she has faced.

“I know many of you have gone through this or are going through it as we speak. Let’s do it together. Let’s talk about it, hear each other out, and seek advice when we need it,” Saldana continues. “I will be sharing with you what I do, what I eat and how I feel about it in hopes that it will be of any help to you. Cool?”

The mom of two, who married artist Marco Perego in 2013, shares the baby steps she has been taking to return to her pre-baby physique, and ends the post with an invitation for fans to join her on her journey.

“I want to prove to myself that if I have the right determination I can do anything,” she says.

I think she actually looks better with a little more weight on her. She definitely looks healthier….way too skinny before.

I just love her! She is a wonderful actress — very natural. She is someone I would become friends with. I can’t wait until she shows the babies faces, I’ll bet they are too cute.

This awesome. Love when women are supporting each other!

Shes tiny and I’m not sure what she is going to try to show? Weight loss? She’s like a size 2! I’m sure she has experienced some physical changes with the birth of twins and wish her nothing but the best. However, I’m a little concerned that she is just an example of something unattainable for most women and especially those that have recently had children. She looks great and it wouldn’t hurt her to gain something so…just not understanding what she’s going for. Besides that your body changes after children and its ok to embrace it and realize your body will probably never be the same cause you GREW humans and that’s more awesome then your previous abs!!!

CJ, she was not complaining about her weight, she said that her thyroid is out of wack and her platelets crashed. Those were her concerns, having low energy is a common problem if you have hypothyroidism. Everyone has different health issues, just because she is still slim does not mean that her body did not go through a rough time during and post-pregnancy.

Good for her that she is doing great.

Being slim doesn’t = healthy.

I know plenty of slim, skinny people with health issues from here to the moon and back.

This year will mark the 3 yr anniversary of an old boss of mine (RIP Gretchen) who was in tip top shape. Totally healthy looking, sophisticated, slim and could wear just about anything and she always watched what she ate. She died from a heart attack mere 3 months after retiring.

In the same sentiment I know plenty of bigger people who are healthy. We are all different and no two bodies are the same.

Zoe looked amazing when she was pregnant. I’ve always thought she was too thin but that’s just my personal opinion. I hope she finds the balance she is looking for 🙂

She was very thin before, now she looks kind healthier.

Agree with the sentiments of the other posters who said she looks great now and doesn’t need to be thinner. What puzzles me is that she wants to share this “journey” in a public way as it seems so out of character. She wouldn’t even confirm her pregnancy until the third trimester and I recall she made some remark about invading her privacy when someone alluded to it in the media. For someone who doesn’t want to acknowledge a very obvious pregnancy, seems counterintuitive for her to want to share and discuss weight loss, body image, etc.

I’m thinking it’s because a. She wants to spread awareness about post-birth complications like thyroid and platelet problems and b. She wants to let other woman experiencing those things to know that they aren’t alone!
