Zooey Deschanel Wants the Sex of Her Baby to Be a Surprise

03/27/2015 at 11:00 AM ET

Will Zooey Deschanel be welcoming a new girl or a new boy this summer? She doesn’t know!

“We are going to be surprised. It’s more fun, you know? Make it into a game,” she joked Thursday on Jimmy Kimmel Live! However, the actress and fiancé Jacob Pechenik have found the biggest challenge is getting other people — like their ultrasound techs — to keep the secret.

“You’re like, ‘Don’t tell me, don’t tell me!’ The last time the technician [said], ‘Just so you know, I always use the pronoun he — it’s just my habit.’ She set it up because we were paranoid. Most people want to find out!”

The New Girl star, 35, isn’t the only Deschanel expected — her sister and fellow actress Emily Deschanel is pregnant with her second child.

Deschanel said it’s fun sharing this experience with the Bones star, but that pregnancy does have a few food-related downsides.

“You can’t have sushi. You can’t have cheese that tastes good,” she told host Jimmy Kimmel. “You can have a little bit [of coffee] but I would have four cups a day and now I can have half a cup, which is a joke. It’s a total joke! No alcohol, I miss that – I like wine.”

Love her! she is too cute 🙂

Finally, someone besides me is NOT finding out. If I had another, I wouldn’t find out on it either. I loved the surprise of it and you can totally do a gender neutral room.

I did not have the patience to wait to find out the gender of my two kids. My surprise was when each of them was born and was 1000 times more beautiful than what I had imagined.

Except you can have sushi. Eat from a reputable place and you’ll be just dandy. Do people who follow this “rule” think that women in Japan stop eating sushi when they’re pregnant?

Its always weird to me when people want to know the sex of the baby. I know the reasoning, like buying clothes and stuff, but it is LITERALLY like the only true surprise in life! Plus, if you have your heart set on one sex and find out its the other in utero, sets you up for disappointment. FAR less likely to be disappointed after 10 hours in labor when that lil bundle of joy is placed on your lap, regardless of the sex

You MUST eat sushi. Sushi is the rice not the fish. Sushi means seasoned rice. I even fed it to my preemie niblet twin grand daughters at 6 months. Rice is good for babies. Most sushi eateries have a whole section on the menu with vegetarian or vegan options. Ask!

I’m pregnant with my third baby. I have a boy and girl at home. After 2 previous miscarriages, I don’t care what sex my baby is. I just want a pregnancy that ends happily! 🙂 On the contrary, it’s killing everyone around us. They want to know so bad! HAHA

I always tell my husband when (or if) we have a child I want it to be a surprise. He thinks I’m crazy. I’ve always imagined it like that. Seems more exciting and traditional. And yeah, the guessing game seems like it’d be fun!

Eat the dang sushi. Eat the dang cheese. These restrictions are ridiculous. I eat whatever my baby wants me to eat. As long as you know where your food is coming from and how it’s cooked, there’s no need for the paranoia. As for finding out the sex, I am tomorrow! Getting pregnant was my surprise, because I thought it was out of the realm of possibility. I want to bond with the baby, call him or her by the names I’ve chosen, buy cute onesies…the silly junk that comes with being a first time mom. No need to hate on people who choose to know or choose not to know.

Whether you find out at birth or beforehand, it’s always a pleasant surprise. 🙂

I totally agree with her! I always said that if I am lucky enough to have children I don’t want to know the sex until they are born.

there a few surprises left in the world and I think that waiting until delivery day to find out if it’s a boy or a girl. I love that and Zooey’s choice, too.

I didn’t find out the gender with any of mine …. two boys and a girl! 🙂 It was really fun for us to wait plus it drove everyone in our families crazy so that was an added bonus, lol!!

When I had my third via c-section I was also getting a tubal and the nurses and doctors were so excited to see what I was having since I already had two boys. It was a party in the OR when she said “it’s a girl!”

Amy- Most Sushi ISN’T cooked, though, which is the problem (like many uncooked meats, it can harbor bacteria and other not-so-good things). The fact of the matter is, no matter how careful people are with preparing them, there’s pretty much no way to guarantee that stuff like raw meat and soft cheese is free of bacteria and co.

That being said, I DO agree that women shouldn’t panic when they read all the various pregnancy eating “restrictions” online. They should ask their doctor what THEY think and then eat according to THEIR recommendations. 🙂

Hearing my husband say, “It’s a girl!” after a long labor was one of the greatest experiences of my life! And I plan of being surprised again with my second. That said, it’s still a surprise when people find out what they are having in the 2nd trimester! To each their own!
