Steven Tyler: Being There for the Birth of My Grandson ‘Was a Moment of a Lifetime’

02/13/2015 at 06:45 PM ET

When Steven Tyler got word that his daughter Liv had gone into labor over a month ahead of schedule, he hopped on a plane to race to her side.

“When I got the call that Liv was going into labor, after crying like a baby myself, I immediately dropped everything and went to the airport to get on the next available flight,” the Aerosmith frontman, 66, told PEOPLE Friday in a statement later posted to his Facebook page.

Still, the rockstar grandfather cut it pretty close — but ended up making it just in time!

“When I landed I kept calling my daughter Mia, who was already helping Liv, and she kept giving me minute-by-minute updates… ‘HURRY THE BABY IS COMING!’ ” Tyler writes. “I made it RIGHT in time before my second grandson entered this world. It was another (God wink) moment of a lifetime for me.”

Adds Mia, “There is nothing more special than helping to bring a life into this world with the most important people in your life. So proud to be a part of it. And so very excited to have a new pup in our wolf pack. So much love in this pic.”

Liv, 37, and her boyfriend — sports manager and agent David Gardner — welcomed another boy on Wednesday, PEOPLE confirmed exclusively with a rep for The Leftovers actress. “He’s healthy, and everyone is very happy,” the a rep said at the time. Their new son arrived six weeks early, a source added.

This latest addition to their brood joins older older brothers Milo, 10, and Gray, 7, the couple’s children from previous marriages.

I remember meeting Steven Tyler many years ago in Atlanta Georgia after a concert and he was so nice and down to earth he truly is a beautiful soul.

A fine example of family and what really matters.

Must be nice to be able to hop on the next available flight whenever desired, probably at the cost of thousands of dollars! Of course, I won’t criticize him for that, and I think it’s great he was able to make it in time. Still, must be nice!

He looked like Willie Nelson for a minute–had to do a double-take!

Aw congrats to Liv. Nice pic.

@exit 82–there are a lot of fathers in their daughter’s delivery rooms. There is nothing cringeworthy about it…they don’t have to be “front and center” to the birth to be able to enjoy the experience of the birth of their grandchildren

Liv looks absolutely beautiful. Steven looks like a proud papa and Grandpa, Mia is the proud Auntie and Sister. What a wonderful family. Congratulations to all of them.

Congratulations to everybody who will play a part in this little one’s life! What a blessing. Steven Tyler, I would love to see pics of you playing and spending time with this cherished family member.

Where is the dad???

While I might not have chosen to have my dad in the delivery room, I would choose it a thousand times over if it meant he’d be here to be a grandpa. He died in 2008, would have become a grandfather 21 months later, and I miss him every day.

Aw cute Steven looks like such a normal, down to earth grampa in that picture. I love it. Cute family.

@exit82, my Dad was at the hospital when I was in labor, and in the room for great amount of that time. He wasn’t in there when I gave birth, but came in shortly after. This was his second grandchild, but first chance to be there since my SIL had a Cesarean birth. There is nothing wrong with him being there.

I absolutely love this! The fact he wanted so badly to be there for his daughter and new grandson that he did whatever he could. Shame on those of you with negative comments. I’d hate to have or be around your negativity in real life.

sandee on

but he wasn’t there for Liv’s birth….

Steven Tyler looks the best that I have ever seen him in that picture with Liv and Mia! And it’a amazing how much they favor each other as sisters even though they don’t look a whole lot like their dad (aside from those famous lips lol) and have different moms! I’m glad he got to be there for Liv and his grandson’s entrance into the world…big congrats to their family on this blessing of new life! 💜

Brandi – Seriously? They look a LOT like their dad, which is obviously why they look like each other.

Mimi- I’m guessing that he was probably the one taking the pictures. 🙂

That’s a nice story, a grandad so excited about the delivery. I like the photo very much, very candid and normal.

Congratulations to Steven and Liv Tyler! And savor this moment, because it really IS once in a lifetime!

When you are in The Public Eye for as long as Liv Tyler has, your real personality eventually comes out. She has consistently seemed like such a lovely, down to Earth person. I’ve always thought her maturity and that reserved quality has made her a “rock” to her family and she seems to keep them grounded. Tragedy can be a legacy for rock star families but they’ve avoided it, despite Steven Tyler’s fame during decades of major transition in America. I wish them well; lots of joy and good health for baby and fam.

Congratulations to the happy family.

Look at the love on those faces!!! Beautiful! There is nothing wrong w/having your Father in the delivery room if that’s what everyone wants. Just look at their faces. No one thought it was an ewww moment.

Congratulations on the new blessing.

This photo warms my heart xo

Didn’t know Steven is 66 already, he still looks young.

I think the grandparents being in the room during the birth is a very American thing. It’s pretty much unheard of in the UK. It would be seen as very weird here.

Such a cute story! I’ve read his memoirs and I think it’s wonderful that he can now be the dad he wasn’t able to be when his girls were little. He might have missed Liv being born but he made damn sure he didn’t miss his grandson instead! That’s love. That’s making a positive change.

So happy for Liv and her family! Nice picture.
