Claire Coffee is going to be a mom!

“We had definitely been planning for this because we both have such crazy schedules,” the Grimm star, 34, exclusively tells PEOPLE of expecting her first child with her husband, Chris Thile of the Punch Brothers.

“They talk about those mothering hormones kicking in around age 30 and that definitely is true. It’s been something I’ve been excited about for a while.”

In fact Coffee, who will welcome a son in May, was so eager to find out she was pregnant that she almost missed out on learning the happy news.

“I’m not a patient person and I didn’t realize you had to wait 10 minutes for the double lines to show up on those little pregnancy tests,” the actress says. “So I kept trying and just seeing the one line and I thinking, ‘Oh well, maybe next time.'”

“Later, I was taking out the garbage and I saw these little pink double lines in the trash,” she recalls. “It was very exciting and my husband was in town so we were together.”

Now that Coffee is six months along, the couple have already picked out a few favorite potential names and are starting to convert Thile’s music room into a nursery.

“We’re working with what is in there already, so there’s some reds and blues and blacks going on,” Coffee says of the room. “I’m trying to buy as little as possible beforehand because my girlfriends all say you won’t know what you need until you meet the baby and know what they prefer.”

Glad that she is on a successful show. Loved her on General Hospital some years back. Congrats!

“until you meet the baby and know what they prefer?” Do babies usually come out with a list of preferences?

So sweet. I agree, is better to keep things simple and not buy all kind of insane stuff, even before the baby is there. A friend who gave birth recently said indeed, it takes few days or weeks to understand your kid.

To Truth – babies absolutely show preference. After three, I’ve had one that loved pacifiers, one that wouldn’t ‘take any and one that only liked a certain kind. I’ve had one baby that would drink my milk from any bottle, one that never used a bottle and one that only drinks from a certain brand. They show preference to swings or rockers or stationary seats. They show preference in how many layers they like to be dressed in to be comfortable. They even show preference in the types of blankets, colors and toys they like. One of mine was fascinated by the crib mobile, one cried whenever we turned it on. You could waste a lot of money buying things you don’t need, that the baby would never use or like.
Congrats to Claire, I think she’s being very smart and not going crazy buying things until she finds out the baby’s preferences.

Congrats to you both! I Love Grimm and watch every episode! 🙂 Hopefully you won’t be leaving the show after baby is born. Time off? Sure, But don’t leave Grimm Claire. hahaha 🙂
You are being very smart not buying everything in sight. Especially because this is your first child. You go baby shopping and of course your excited, you think Oh gosh I am going to need one of these and one of those and come to find out after baby is born you don’t even use them once. Wasted Money. Baby’s are expensive so if you can cut costs do so. You will learn what your baby wants and needs as time goes by.
Again, congratulations to you and your husband!
