One look at Jenna Dewan-Tatum and it’s hard to fathom the fact that it has only been 18 months since she gave birth to her first child, daughter Everly.

But the 34-year-old actress insists that it is just the result of much hard work.

“I work out with Jen Johnson, this trainer that I’ve worked out with forever who does a dance-based training,” Dewan-Tatum told PEOPLE while attending the Hollywood Reporter‘s Women in Entertainment Breakfast.

“It’s awesome. It’s so hard. Everyone I brought to it says it’s the hardest workout they’ve ever done.”

But even the demanding certified trainer has nothing on Dewan-Tatum’s other exercise partner.

“When I can, I do that,” she says of her fitness regimen, before laughing and adding, “When I can’t, I’m literally ruining around chasing Everly and that is my workout. When you have [a daughter] who wants to do nothing but run and dance … you are just running after her making sure she is not hitting her head on everything.”

Or, more often, hiding her mama’s stash of cosmetics. Dewan-Tatum jokes she’s clueless how mothers manage to leave the house with a full face of makeup, let alone keep track of their essentials at home.

“I’m like, ‘How does that happen?’ Everly will actually take it from me and go put it somewhere else,” she says. “I’m like, ‘Okay, I need that makeup back.’ It’s a whole big circus in our household.”

But her wardrobe has changed, too. Since giving birth, the hands-on mom finds herself gravitating to stylish staple items that are easy for on the go.

“It’s like, ‘What’s comfortable? What can I look like I didn’t roll out of bed in?’ ” she shares. “Those are my two things. I’m like, ‘Okay, throw on a pair of jeans, maybe a cute pair of boots and you’re done.’ Sunglasses and hats are everything after you have a child.”

Despite loving all of the day-to-day chaos, Dewan-Tatum is looking forward to a time when she and Everly can enjoy the more sedate aspects of life.

“She won’t even sit through five minutes of Baby Einstein,” she says with a laugh. “So there’s no movies to be watching. Maybe in a year. Everyone says in a year — 2½, 3 is when they really start watching movies. That will be fun because I want to see them more than she does. That’s the thing — all those cartoons. It’s embarrassing.”

So for now, keeping Everly happy and engaged — and maybe a bit still — will fall to Dewan-Tatum’s secret weapon.

“It’s not a toy,” she shares. “She just loves boxes and pulling things out and in of boxes. Literally, I can give her my purse and she will pull things out and put things back in for — I’ve counted — an hour before. So far, it’s been really good.”

So good that when the notion of giving Everly a Christmas present that was a box with a purse inside of it was offered up, the doting mother was floored.

“Yes!” she exclaims. “It would blow her mind. That is probably what I am going to do!”

Give me a break. Between her nanny, maid and gardener, she cannot find time to wear makeup??? She has one kid. Yeah right. Such BS!!

Lilly pond, don’t be quick to judge ! You don’t know her, don’t know if she has a nanny, maid or gardener. Also, don’t be jealous, because having her money, who would do the chores anyway ? I know I wouldn’t !

What I wonder is : how does she wonder how women find time to put some makeup on when she finds time to work out ? Obviously, when you have time to work out, you have time to wear makeup !

Moby: Maybe she meant it in a different way…Maybe she was asking herself how moms find the occasions or reasons to wear make-up.You obviously don’t need any if you work out or just stay at home with your kid…but you usually wear some when you go out. Maybe she thinks that you can’t go out often when you have a still young child at home waiting for you.

Did you guys read? She said her daughter takes her makeup and hides it. She said she can’t imagine how moms can keep track and organized with all their stuff to have their makeup on. I thought the same thing – spoiled Hollywood mom, then I read it and thought her comments were refreshing, reminded me of when I had a toddler. You’re just surprised and bewildered by your child’s personality and whirlwind. Sounds like a hands-on mom – she reallu knows her child. Good job! That’s how to have a close bond. The anti-Kim K.

I read that too. But her daughter is only 18-month-old, so is keeping the makeup out of her reach that hard ??

It said she was JOKING about not knowing how other mom’s find time. I don’t have the money she does but just because she has money doesn’t mean I think she doesn’t understand how hard being a mom is. She is just talking about her child & it sounds like she doesn’t take herself to seriously so I think (IMO) that all of these things were said in a joking way. I thought it was refreshing 🙂

She’s opened the door for my 84 year old grandmother last year, and was so kind. I don’t understand why people hate on her, she’s a beautiful person, inside and out!

Suzi on

I like her, a lot. She’s funny, cracks on herself and seems like a really down to earth person. They’re a beautiful family.

I thought I was going to “like” this article, but I couldn’t make it through all the “likes.” Like, whatever.

Life is crazy with kids. When my twins were little I didn’t even bother with makeup. The only thing I wore was Chapstick. Sure I could have found the time, but I was so tired that I honestly didn’t even care. I felt like I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off half the time so if I got a shower and had clean hair I was good to go lol. Now my kids are in school so I so my makeup as often as possible. You’ll get to a point where things aren’t as chaotic and you can find time to relax and breathe a little. 🙂

She sounds like a good mom, whose main concern is the well being of her daughter.

I don’t care about makeup anymore. It’s not important to me now. I’ve worn it once since my son was born and he’s 13 months old.

Just like anything else, you MAKE time. I work full time and have toddler twins and I make time in the morning to take a little time to spend on myself so I feel good about myself. Granted on the weekends if I’m going somewhere with my kids I don’t mind going make up less with my hair in a ponytail at all. It’s just all in what you take time for. She’s a celebrity with people to cook and clean and basically do everything for her and her one child so for her to say she doesn’t have time for a few minutes of make up or anything else is a bit silly.

With her hot husband, you can bet she’s putting make up on! And her daughter hiding it? She either has more to put on or she takes it off her.

Tara on

guess it’s much easier when you’ve had cosmetic surgery eh Jenna?

Why be so catty? She made a casual joke, and she apparently needs armor to protect herself from the onslaught of insults….wow, what will most of you do if you have a second child?

Emmaly- How do you know she has people to do everything for her? Not all celebs do (and in fact, Jenna has actually made comments alluding to not having a nanny at least- saying something to the effect of her and Channing take turns watching her while the other one works).

Moby- Actually yes, it can be. You can put stuff up “out of reach” all you want, but toddlers are known for giving mountain goats a run for their money! 🙂

Jenna seems a very down to earth lady, like her!

Lovely family. Happy for her!
