Scarlett Johansson Steps Out 2 Months After Baby

11/04/2014 at 08:20 AM ET

Scarlett Johansson took a break from mommy duty Monday night!

The actress made a rare public appearance — her first official event since welcoming daughter Rose Dorothy with fiancé Romain Dauriac — when she stepped out for a screening of The Theory of Everything in New York City.

The new mom, who wore minimal makeup and kept her cropped blonde locks casual, showed off her svelte body after baby in a black and white printed dress.

Johansson hosted the Crosby Street Hotel event to support her former The Other Boleyn Girl costar Eddie Redmayne, who is already earning Oscar buzz for playing Stephen Hawking in the biopic.

The movie night marks Johansson’s first big outing since being spotted in workout gear New York last month.

PEOPLE confirmed Johansson, 29, and French journalist Dauriac, 32, welcomed their first child in September. “Mother and daughter are doing well,” her publicist Marcel Pariseau told the Associated Press at the time.

She looks great & healthy! I love the tired look, (not being negative) but it tells me she is the one caring for her baby, NOT a nanny! *LOVE HER!

Andrea on

Gorgeous as ever!

I live in the same building as she. There is a nanny, everyday.

Her body looks good! I miss her long hair.

yeah right on

Sure Julia, sure.

So Julia?!?! So What?!?!

Even if she DOES have a Nanny why is that such a bad thing? If I had the money I would have paid it in a heartbeat to have help. To take a shower without rushing, to go to the store in peace, maybe even … oh I don’t know take a nap! Caring for and raising a baby is one of the hardest tasks and I don’t understand women’s need to tear others down! What do you want some type of badge for doing it the ‘hard way’? I don’t get it.

She looks really fantastic and I hope she’s enjoying her sweet girl. Good for her on going out too – everyone needs a little space!

We certainly wouldn’t want a movie star who’d just had a baby to appear in public with People Magazine commenting on her body, now would we? It’s not having a baby that counts, it’s what your body looks like afterward that concerns this publication.

I love her outfit! Those shoes especially!

Love the name…very “Golden Girls” .

Lauren on

Yeah, she’ should have her 2-month-old strapped to her 24/7, and especially at a work event.

STFU Sara, you’re a complete moron.

Carol on

Wow – and not in a good way. She looks like a 40 year-old suburban mother at a kid’s school function…. Bad hair and outfit.

heather on

Is she trying to look like Elsa Pataky? It’s not working.

Hea on

sara – Why would she bring a two month old to a work event? Especially one consisting of a movie screening in a what would likely be a loud theatre with people wanting to actually see and hear the movie and not a crying infant?

Loved her outfit, fits her so nicely.

Sure Julia… Evan if it is remotely true mind your own business! She looks terrific!!!!!

Lauren and Hea- Exactly! Also, Scarlett showed up solo to this event- meaning that little Rose was most likely with her FATHER, not a nanny (and even if he had gone with Scarlett, the baby could have easily been left with a grandparent or other relative or friend)!

Sara- Do (or did or will depending) you stay home with your children? If you don’t, then you are being a huge hypocrite! And you clearly must be superwoman since you know every detail of every celeb’s life and therefore know that most of them don’t raise their own kids! 😉

Scarlett is fine. and her farts smell fine too!

I really love those shoes. She look great.

Boy, why is everyone so defensive regarding Julia’s comment? She didn’t say anything negative!

It seems having a nanny makes people feel a certain way- even those who defend it.

I personally think nannies are fine- in the olden days you’d have whole extended families under one roof who helped raise children but that’s not common anymore. There is no shame in needing outside help (nannies, daycare, babysitters, maids, etc.) No shame at all.

Emily- I think it’s Sara’s comment that people are reacting to for the most part, not Julia’s.

Like the name Rose Dorothy, a lovely name!
