Zoë Saldana Jokes She Might Need Three Halloween Costumes

10/02/2014 at 04:00 PM ET

Zoë Saldana is all about fake it, ’till you make it — especially when it comes to morning sickness.

On Wednesday, the actress looked pretty in pink when she stepped out in a bubblegum-hued Christian Dior trapeze dress at the Academy’s Opening Night of Hollywood Costume in Los Angeles.

And while long, flowing frocks have been a staple for Saldana, 36, throughout her pregnancy, she encourages other moms to embrace the bump — even if that means masking a few symptoms.

“It’s just wear what feels comfortable. But whatever it is you’re feeling internally, doesn’t mean that you have to look it,” she told PEOPLE.

“If you’re having morning sickness, please don’t dress like a ‘morning sick’ person. Make an effort and look beautiful because it’s a beautiful time.”

Saldana has stayed mum about her pregnancy, but now the mom-to-be has double the news to share.

With the countdown to Halloween officially on, the actress — who PEOPLE confirms is expecting twins with husband Marco Perego — is contemplating her costume and admits she’ll likely need more than one.

“I might need three costumes. I might have to make some adjustments,” she told E! News.

That’s good advice because mom’s can get so caught up in the sickness. Then before we know it we have lost ourselves. It takes a long time to feel beautiful again.

Sandra on

Obviously, she has not experienced “morning sickness”.

Leah on

She made a lot of valid points and she looks beautiful. And twins, wow, what a double blessing!

Anonymous on

I agree obviousky has not endured mirning sickness.

LIV4LUV on

Most couples want two kids and Zoe is so lucky to have her family complete with one pregnancy.

Angie on

She looks amazing. It’s weird seeing her ‘bigger’, because she’s naturally such a tiny woman. But so lovely. I admire women that can overcome whatever’s making them feel terrible to just look like conquering goddesses, ’cause I pretty much embrace the ‘i feel like crap’ look and own it xD

Mimi on

She is not my favorite person, but I wish her well. It is so funny when starts comment on things that they obviously have not experienced. I suffered from “morning sickness” and the last thing I was worried about was looking cute. Puking your guts out and fashion are not synonymous.

KeepingItClassy on

I’m sure all the pregnant women who are experiencing morning sickness are immeasurably grateful for Zoe’s sage advice.

I keep reading this three costume comment about how she’s talking about Halloween while pregnant? And she’d need three costumes? It’s such an odd comment, it makes it sound more like she’s saying, for future Halloween plans, I’ll need three additionally costumes, like she’s having triplets instead of twins. Maybe it’s just odd wording, but if I were talking about myself and my own costume but then including my future twin children, I’d say “plus two additional costumes.” Not three.

Whatever. I just wanted to put that out there.

To those who are saying that she “clearly hasn’t had morning sickness,” well, you clearly haven’t had twins. Women who are pregnant with twins, have TWICE the hormones and are far more likely to have bad morning sickness because of it. I love that you are all judging her for saying that she wasn’t going to let it get her down and really stop her from doing her job (which included having to look fashionable). Judge on, Mommy Army. *eyeroll*

“If you’re having morning sickness, please don’t dress like a ‘morning sick’ person. Make an effort and look beautiful because it’s a beautiful time.”
All fine and dandy if that’s what YOU want to do. But it really annoys me when stars tell others how to live their lives.
If you want to be sick and live in sweats for a week, you do it! If you want to smile and wear pretty dresses and be violently ill on the inside, you do that!

To those who are saying that she “clearly hasn’t had morning sickness,” well, you clearly haven’t had twins. Women who are pregnant with twins have TWICE the hormones and are far more likely to have severe morning sickness. I love that you are all criticizing her for basically saying that she wasn’t going to let it get her down and that being beautiful and dressing up makes her feel better. But that’s the Mommy Army for you, always judging other mothers.

Momof3 on

Have morning noon and night sickness the whole 9 months and then give your opinion!!!!

jlo27916 on

Uhhhh with my twins- I had EXTREME fatigue and ALL day sickness.

This is brutally inconsiderate of women who have rough pregnancies. When you’re puking every day for months, and you barf so hard you pee yourself, you deserve a medal for leaving the house with your teeth brushed – if you can manage it!

Tess on

She’s becoming a new mom of twins and her mid 40s ex is still chasing after some 20 year old. She’s smart. Congrats!

What a stupid thing to say about morning sickness.

Andrea on

From one mom of multiples to another : congrats!!! Twins are a wonderful blessing!

Kat on

Okay, I think her intent with that comment that everyone is hating on is that for a lot of us, we feel at least just a teensy bit better when we are dressed in something nicer than 3-day-old sweat pants and an old t-shirt. I’m pretty sure she’s not suggesting we all slap on high heels and a full-face of makeup to reflect this “beautiful time” despite the pregnancy sickness. Just a suggestion to maybe help us feel a little bit better. And yes, I am a veteran of the all-day/all-night nausea/vomiting/dizziness zombification that is so referred to as “morning sickness.”… and I’m willing to bet she is too considering she’s pregnant with twins.

Denise on

Who is she to give advice? I wish these “beautiful” people would keep their traps shut for once.

Guest on

Wow – way to not support other women, Zoe. Yes pregnancy is an incredibly beautiful time but for goodness sakes – MANY women suffer horribly with morning (try all day) sickness and lots of them have other children to care for at the same time as well so it’s pretty inappropriate to chastise your sisters with “whatever it is you’re feeling internally, doesn’t mean that you have to look it…If you’re having morning sickness, please don’t dress like a ‘morning sick’ person. Make an effort and look beautiful” Holy crap! Count yourself lucky and then try SUPPORTING other women, not cutting them down. Harsh and… I’m disappointed.

KL on

Aw she is beautiful!! But he needs a fricken haircut!!!! ick..

ohmyyyamanda on

It’s easy for her to say, none of us regular pregnant women with morning sickness have a stylist, hair stylist and makeup artist on call to do everything for us. Sorry Zoe but the last thing I want to do is put on an gown and heels for work after I’ve been puking all night.

Tina on

What an asshole.

It’s just wear what feels comfortable. But whatever it is you’re feeling internally, doesn’t mean that you have to look it,” she told PEOPLE.

Her husband reminds me of a young John Malkovich.

KP on

I’m not mad at her comments and I understand where she’s coming from. My dad always said to look and dress your best, especially when you feel your worst….don’t forget your beautiful….

Eyeroll on

Blech. Why are so many of you personally butthurt about what she’s saying about how SHE chooses to dress and what works for HER? Not everything is about you! How self absorbed to think anything is directed at any one if you personally. Mommy Wars are the grossest thing ever and it never seems to slow down…..

PT on

Zoe looks gorgeous, but she needs a hair stylist on her hair.

Brandi on

I agree with Kate’s comment about the Mommy Army members present here. Good Lord – RELAX. Zoe is in a business where you are always expected to look your best and it’s her personal belief for HERSELF that she doesn’t have to look the way she feels internally. Each woman’s pregnancy is different and unique…some have tolerable morning sickness, others have none at all, and there are those unfortunate souls that have severe morning sickness. Her comment isn’t a dig at those moms who were too sick to care how they looked for nine months. She’s just talking about her approach to her own pregnancy. There seems to be some seriously overly-hormonal women posting comments here today and it’s just sad because there’s no reason to be offended by anything she said. SMH…think before you post and take a few minutes to look at the WHOLE picture.

Priscilla on

Nice advice. Congratulations on her new addition!

Terri on

Never been pregnant, but I dress how I want to, thanks. Still love your movies, though.

Alex on

She looks good, her hubby is very handsome. Hopefully she is due within the next 4 months otherwise she looks way huge (she looks uncomfortable).

Alex on

^^ oops I mean next 4 weeks not months LOL

Maxine on

Zoe is a good actress, so happy for her all the success.

rose on

My morning sickness lasted morning, noon and night for 6 months and landed me in the hospital. When you feel really sick and have puked several times in one day, you don’t care about faking anything or looking cute. You are just trying to make it through.

Hope she’s able to fake it through that marriage for a few more years at least.

Ascuncion on

Beauty and the beast her husband is the beauty of course. Also, he is only with her for the money she is not at all attractive and I am told that she bought the eggs of a Caucasian woman because she didn’t want her children to look like her. Knowing Zoe, I believe it.

Anonymous on

Many women have morning sickness, she is not alone. Glad she is handling it with the ease and can joke about it.

Anonymous on

Her comment is borderline offensive. It’s her job to look pretty, and she gets lots of help. Don’t be telling us pregnant normals how to dress, sweetie.

Nancy on

Congrats to Zoe and the family!
