Ali Larter: Why a Second Pregnancy Is a ‘Little Less Charming’

As the spokeswoman for Dole’s new nutritious Garden Soup, Ali Larter is literally the poster child for healthy eating — but when it comes to pregnancy cravings, she’s willing to break a few rules.

“I try to be healthy. I’ll eat green, but a salad is not a meal for me when I’m pregnant,” the Legends star, 38, tells PEOPLE.

Now that she’s expecting her second child this winter, Larter has been rounding out her meals by catering to a few of her cravings.

“I have allowed myself to have some pasta and all I really want is bread slathered in cheese,” the mom-to-be admits, adding pregnancy is “the one time” she eases up on her eating plan.

But besides the change in diet, the actress — who has yet to find out the sex of her baby on the way — says it’s been a completely different experience than it was when she was expecting her son, 3½-year-old Theodore Hayes.

“The first pregnancy was such a magical time, everything’s so new and enchanting,” she shares. “[Now] I’m working and running around … things don’t really slow down, so it’s a little bit less charming.”

Adds Larter, “That being said, I feel like so blessed and lucky to be having our baby.”

Despite being caught up in the “universal mom gripe” — exhaustion! — Larter has been busy preparing her preschooler for life as a big brother.

“We moved Teddy into a new room so that’s been really fun, transitioning him and getting him really excited for the new addition to our family,” she says.

Between her new show and the family’s upcoming arrival, Larter has had little time to sit back and relax. But with her girlfriends asking about a baby shower, the actress admits her time to settle down may be fast approaching.

“I haven’t really gotten into it yet,” she explains. “I’ve just been in work mode. Hopefully in a month or so I’ll start slowing down.”

Why does she need a second baby shower, when her first child is still a toddler ? Did she threw out all her previous baby gear already ? Or is this a slip up that means she’s having a girl this time ?

Megan – this is Hollywood, not the “real world”.

It says her friends are asking about a baby shower, which means they probably want to throw one for her. It’s very common to have “sprinkles” for moms, especially if the baby is a different sex. Even if it’s not, it’s fun to celebrate a new little one! If her friends want to do it, why not?

Bree on

every baby deserves to be celebrated. and if her friends want to throw her a shower, so be it.

it doesn’t always have to be something elaborate (but since celebrities can probably afford it, it will), even just a “sprinkle” instead of a “shower,” each baby deserves the opportunity to have something done to recognize his or her impending arrival in the world. no matter if that baby is number 1 or number 4.

Moms expecting their second baby can sometimes feel like this one is less important or exciting than their first, so having a celebration to honor her and the baby is a great way to help her feel loved.

My daughter’s friends/family gave her a baby shower with her first – wanted to do the same with her 2nd & 3rd but she decided to wait until AFTER they were born and do a “meet & greet!” Some people brought gifts but as it wasn’t a “shower” nobody had to feel obligated or anything and all had a great time meeting the boys…………………..Just saying…………..

Why are we so quick to try to call out or judge other women? Maybe her friends want to do it for her. I know a lot of people that throw them for more than just the first child. I’m sure they don’t need your permission!

natalie on

you’re kind of a cheap parent if you expect your 2nd kid to wear or use hand me downs from the first, especially once they get to school age. way to make them get teased!

I didn’t have a shower with my first and wont IF we have another. I’m so glad she added that she is lucky to be having a baby as this article is ripe for “be thankful you can” posts. Do without a shower and donate. If you can, it is the least you can do.

Natalie, I wore hand-me-downs from my sister. It wasn’t because my parents were cheap; it’s because they didn’t have a ton of money. And it’s wasteful to buy a lot of new clothes especially if the hand-me-downs are in good condition. And I wasn’t teased either.

heather on

Natalie, why would a kid get teased? How would his/her peers know the clothes are hand me downs?

It’s not cheap to reuse clothes. What if they don’t have the money? Judgmental much?

Many celebrities donate whatever they get at their showers to charity, even if it is their first child. If that is what Ali is doing, then she might as well have a shower for every child she has.

natalie- Wearing hand-me-downs gets you teased in school? That’s news to me. I wore hand-me-downs all the time (and they were my BROTHER’S old clothes to boot!), and not once did I get teased about them! Also, where in this article does Ali state that baby number two will be wearing Teddy’s (love that they call him that, btw!) hand-me-downs?

I didn’t have a shower with my first baby because we were new to the area and didn’t really know anyone. When we adopted several years later, we knew lots of people, and since we spent all our money adopting, I was VERY grateful for the shower everyone gave us. When #3 came along, and was the same sex as #2, I was doubly grateful to have all those lovely hand-me-downs and no one teased any of our children for the clothes they wore. What world do you live in, Natalie? Not the real one, or maybe you just have a lot more money than many people do. Can’t wait to see the new baby and hear the name. Been a big fan of Ali Larter for years!

What struck me was her comment on pasta and bread. Will people ever stop demonizing carbs? There’s nothing wrong with carbs, except the amount you may eat and what you put on them.

Didn’t know Ali Larter is having second one, so happy for her!

Marky, you are a fan of EVERY celebrity. The biggest “kiss-up” on this site, by far.

Jeez, ladies…simmer down. It seems like no matter what a pregnant woman says in an interview, she gets torn down about something. Are you all really that offended by what a complete stranger has to say about their own pregnancy experiences? It’s really sad that so many people think that someone having a baby is an acceptable excuse to tear another woman down. Jealous much?
