Inside Gia and Dominic Lopez’s Wizard of Oz Birthday Bash

There’s no place like … a party!

On Saturday, Mario and Courtney Lopez invited over 40 family and friends to join them in celebrating daughter Gia and son Dominic‘s birthdays at PLAY Indoor Playground in Glendale, California.

Guests were greeted by a sign that read, “Bell out of order, please knock,” and were invited to follow the yellow brick road into the Wizard of Oz-themed party room, which had been decorated with hot air balloons hanging from the ceiling and play stations set up to look like scenes from the movie.

“We really enjoyed seeing the kids run around like crazy and having so much fun playing in the bouncy,” Courtney tells PEOPLE exclusively.

The birthday girl — who turns 4 on Thursday — and birthday boy — who turned 1 on Wednesday — took a break from playing to pose for a quick photo inside one of the houses —  featuring the unfortunate wicked witch’s legs and slippers.

Adding to the fun were face painters, party hats — made to look like Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow, the Wicked Witch and Glinda — and Balloon Monsters, who worked their magic on special requests from the crowd.

Guests noshed on colorful fruit cups made to look like rainbows and festive red glitter cake pops, in honor of Dorothy’s ruby red slippers. Later, the children gathered around the dessert table, adorned with sugar cookies and a Polkatots cake, made up of red velvet, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry cupcakes.

Everyone was sent home with Toto-inspired goodie baskets, personalized with tags gifted by Mabel’s Labels and party favors provided by Stride Rite and Net Nanny. Courtney topped each one off with water (a witch elixir!), a Wizard of Oz mask and an apple.

As for Gia’s big gift, POSH Mommy is surprising her with a personalized nameplate. “She hasn’t seen it yet, so we have to keep it a secret!” Courtney says.

After the birthday bash, Courtney opened up to PEOPLE about everything from planning a party for two to their thoughts on a third child.

PEOPLE: Happy birthday Gia and Nico! How did you choose the themes for their parties? Did Gia help?

Courtney: Gia is obsessed with The Wizard of Oz, so when she mentioned that she’d like that to be the theme, I was so happy! It was perfect for Dominic too.

PEOPLE: Is there one special present she had on her wish list?

Courtney: Any commercial that comes on the TV showing something girly or fun, Gia wants! She is the best person to give a gift to. She gets excited over anything.

PEOPLE: What was your favorite memory from the party? Any special detail or decoration that you planned that went exactly as you hoped?

Courtney: I can’t believe Gia is 4 and Dominic turned 1! He played his little heart out and Gia’s smile was priceless.

Also, the favor baskets I made for the kids were so cute. I had so much fun planning this party!

PEOPLE: What’s your best party tip for planning a joint birthday?

Courtney: To make sure that the theme is something that works for both kids. With The Wizard of Oz theme, both kids were able to play a character type of role, and completely enjoyed the setting.

PEOPLE: How has Gia adjusted to being a big sister — especially now that Nico is mobile?

Courtney: Gia is the best big sister! She is so nurturing and takes the big sister role very seriously. It warms Mario and my hearts to see how these two bond. We hope they will always be close, just as we both are with our own siblings.

PEOPLE: How is Nico? He’s getting big — what are some of his latest milestones? Is he a mama’s boy?

Courtney: Dominic is so big — his rolls are amazing! Haha! He is about to walk any day now.

Yes, he’s a total mama’s boy and I love every minute!

PEOPLE: Mario has been open about wanting a third child — is that still the plan? Or is your family of four complete?

Courtney: We’d love one more child, but we’ll leave it in God’s hands.

“The birthday girl — who turns 4 on Thursday — and birthday boy — who turned 1 on Wednesday — took a break from playing to pose for a quick photo inside one of the houses — featuring the unfortunate wicked witch’s legs and slippers.”

My high school English teachers are somewhere weeping at that terrible sentence structure

My best friend made the hats! She makes a ton of different ones with many themes. I just love ALL her work! You can find her on Etsy under Henson Creations. When you go by to check her out, tell her Becky Bishop sent you!!

Water is an excellent idea. Parents are trying to get them to love water rather than unhealthy fruit juices that are loaded with sugar, contribute to obesity, rot teeth and in older adults cause blood sugar to skyrocket.

I love those pull away cupcakes and Gia’s as Dorothy! So cute!

SUCH a cute party!

This made me uncomfortable! So staged and planned by People Mag. Obviously they paid for it all and planned it for the photo op. I feel for the kids of famous celebrities! Making money off of her birthday.

No minorities at the party huh?

sally- It may have been Mario and or Courtney that contacted PEOPLE rather than the other way around. And even if they didn’t, they’re the ones that deserve most of the blame, IMO. After all, they’re the ones that allowed PEOPLE to photograph their children’s birthday party. They could have easily said “no, we don’t want you to make money off our kids” but they didn’t.

Tanya on

Aww such a fun party, seems they had a great time.
