Drew Barrymore: Why We Chose the Name Frankie – and Not Pepper

05/15/2014 at 09:00 AM ET

Life couldn’t be sweeter for Drew Barrymore.

Days after the Blended star, 39, said “everything is just good as it could possibly be,” she continues in upbeat spirits during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, airing Monday.

“I feel so good and happy,” Barrymore, who welcomed her second daughter, Frankie, on April 22, says with a huge smile alongside costar Adam Sandler.

“My kid is healthy. I have nothing to complain about. I’m so blessed.”

Contributing to her joyfulness is having her 19-month-old daughter Olive appreciate the new baby.

“She really gets that she has a sister and she says, ‘Frankie, sister,'” Barrymore explains. “And she loves playing with her and she’s not mad about it at all yet. She’s all positive at this moment.”

Barrymore also sheds some light on what went into the baby naming process the second time around — a story that she jokes is “not the most interesting.”

“It was just a name that came to my husband and I a few months before she was born, and we were sort of like, ‘I think this is it,'” she says. “And then we gave ourselves room to change our mind, but we never did. My mother-in-law’s maiden name is Franco and I love her so much that it reminds me of her as well.”

The actress and her husband Will Kopelman did have some other names in mind, but they encountered some conflicts.

“Every [name] started sounding like a color or a food,” she shares. “Hazel’s a great name. No, that’s two shades of green. And I love the name Pepper so much, but we were like, ‘Olive and Pepper. Like that’s two things you find in a pantry.'”

I love me some Drew Barrymore !!!

Bhavana on

I don’t care for the names of either of her children, but they’re not my children. I do like Drew, though.

DaisyMoon on

I love “The Wedding Singer”…one of my favorite movies…

Rose on

I love him so much! He seems like such an amazing person! She is super sweet too.

Choi on

I would hate to be the sister named Frankie, sounds like Frankenstein. I mean olive is so much cuter!!! If either of these girls has weight problems….

Tiffany on

I love them together! You can tell that they really care about each other and looks like they have a wonderful friendship.
Wedding Singer is a classic (love the song he sings to her) and 50 First Dates was a great movie. I hope this one is good too.

love the name frankie. i think somewhat masculine names for girls are fun. so glad that drew is so obviously happy with her life.

Amber on

I think Hazel or Pepper would have been cuter than Frankie.

k krumtz on

she seems like the sweetest person. LOVE Olive and Frankie for girls. wonder if its short for francesca?

alannah on

I honestly think the name is fitting. I’m sure back in 1975 Drew wasn’t a common girls name and people were probably like What? But I can’t imagine her being named anything else

Lonnie on

I thinks both names are adorable and fitting for Drew. The names are happy like her.

I don’t mind the name Frankie for a girl, it’s not exactly new…my grandmother is named Frankie (yes that’s her first name and it’s not a nickname) and she is almost 85.

I for one like “some” boy names for girls. I like Randy for a girl.

With all the other wackadoodle celeb names out there (North, Apple, Kal-El) I think it’s nice to see a normal name. While a bit more unusual for a girl, it’s still sweet. Besides, in my family both my mom and I have more masculine sounding names. Hers is Jerri, after her father, and my middle name is Scottie after my dad.

It would have been ironic if she had picked Hazel since that’s what John Krasinski and Emily Blunt named their baby a few months ago. I like Frankie … I think it’s fun and cute. I’m still not a fan of the name Olive, but she is sure a cute little girl!

Irony and coincidence are not the same things. If she had named her daughter Hazel, that would have been a coincidence. Sheesh.

Frankie is a very old fashioned name. That was my aunt’s name, & she was born in the early 1920’s.

Tayla on

Gosh damn it, they would be such a cute real-life couple ;-)

I absolutely love “The Wedding Singer” so much and since that 1st pairing, I’ve secretly wished they were a couple in real life. It seems they have a very strong bond as friends. They’re awesome together.

Amanda on

I’ll take Frankie over North or Blue anyday

Forgot to mention: their song “I Want to Grow Old with You” always makes me cry when I hear it…

I love Drew and her daughter is cute. But she is saying Olive and Pepper are both food? So is Olive and Frankie… Cocktail franks and olives LOL

Shannin on

Awwww :) Drew is so sweet !!!! :)

Martina on

Why would it be ironic if she named the girl Hazel? What does Drew have to do with John & Emily? Frankie is a really cute name. Nice to see Drew looking so beautiful and happy.

Ann on

Nice name Frankie but sounds little boyish, prefer the name Pepper.

taradawes on

I think it’s a super cute name for a little girl, and it actually seems to go with Olive.

Anonymous on

Martina- It would be ironic because it would have been two celebrities choosing the same name within weeks of each other!

Tanya on

Like the name Olive, it sounds quite unique and interesting.

Kathleen Faybik on

First of all I think Drew is a really sweet lady. BUT, where did she get those jeans she wore to the show? I was shocked when she came out to greet Ellen. Honestly, what was she thinking?

Anonymous on

Agree the jeans she wore is little too informal on the TV show.

Ana on

Every parent has the right to choose a name for their children but there are times where some names are plain stupid. Frankie is not a cute name for a girl since it is a boy’s name. I wouldn’t be surprised if her kid changes her name in the future

Honestly, I do not know what’s up with some of these celebrities these days with giving their children weird names. It’s like a competition who can give the weirdest and the most stupidest names out there
