Once Upon a Time costars Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas are living a real-life fairy tale after tying the knot last week.

Their wedding marked more of a beginning than a happy ending: The actors are also expecting their first child together this spring.  Although Dallas, 32, represented their show solo at WonderCon on Sunday, he gushed about his new wife.

“It was just an incredible day of love with all our families together,” he told PEOPLE of the April 12 ceremony. “And obviously, marrying the woman that I love, that stands out. That’s what it’s all about.”

He may play the brave Prince Charming on Once Upon a Time, but Dallas confessed fatherhood has him scared.

“Hey, I fully admit, I am terrified,” he said. “I’m excited but terrified and nervous. And I can’t wait to meet it. I want it to fully develop and have all its lungs, but I want to meet it soon.”

Art is imitating life for the couple, as Goodwin’s character Snow White is also pregnant. Dallas nixed any notion of their child playing Charming and Snow’s baby — “I hope my kid is not an actor, so I don’t want him to start out that early!” — and said he and Goodwin, 35, are preparing for parenthood the old-fashioned way.

“We read so many books. I can’t even tell you. I could probably teach a college-level course in bringing up a child,” Dallas joked. “It doesn’t mean I’ll be great at it, but I hope I’m good at it.”

Mom Said It

"We weren't trying to have kids. We left it up to fate. I knew there was a possibility, but I was really excited. Even if you are trying, just to see a positive result is shocking!"
