Fergie: Why We Chose the Name Axl Jack

11/19/2013 at 07:00 PM ET

She’s used to crazy crowds of cheering concertgoers, but this time it was Fergie‘s own fan girl moment that gave way to her baby boy’s name.

“I had this dream and I was in the audience at this festival. It was outdoors and it was all grimy and nobody knew who I was,” the Black Eyed Peas frontwoman, 38, recalls during an appearance airing Wednesday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“On stage singing was Jim Morrison and then came Bob Marley and then Axl Rose. I was in heaven in this dream and I’m dancing and just getting into the music.”

But her concert experience was suddenly cut short when Fergie’s son decided to kick off his own show — literally. “It was the first time my son kicked me in the stomach and it was like he was feeling the music with me,” she says.

“It was really beautiful and I woke [my husband] Josh [Duhamel] up and I said, ‘Honey, honey, honey, he kicked me. He finally kicked me.'”

Once the expectant mama shared her musical dream with Duhamel, the proud parents — who had already chosen a middle moniker in honor of Fergie’s late uncle — took it as a sign and immediately started brainstorming baby names.

“I told the story and he was like, ‘Morrison? Marley? No. Axl Jack. That’s it!’ It just had this ring to it. It was very strong.”

And, just in case there was any doubt about Fergie’s dream, the couple’s now 3-month-old son Axl Jack lived up to his namesake, putting on quite the performance shortly after his delivery via c-section.

“I see Josh and he’s going ‘Aww,’ and he’s giving the faces and I’m going, ‘Wow, I’m so happy. This moment, it’s so special, so tender,'” the new mom shares. “I hear screaming … and over the side comes Axl and he’s screaming at me, crying and I went, ‘Okay, the name works!'”

Of course, you realize it was ONLY A DREAM? Axl Rose is in NO way the same class of musician as Jim Morrison and Bob Marley!!

Mandy on

I’ve thought of using the name Morrison as I am a huge Jim Morrison fan.

Sandy on

so instead of naming her son after a male family member- she names him after Axl Rose??? How odd.

Anna on

after a duet and many appearances with Slash, she names her son Axl. Nice!

Jen DC on

Um… Does she not realize the reason it “flowed” is because it rhymes with “Apple Jack(s)”?

Their baby, their naming rights.

Poor little guy. At least he’s adorable. He’s got that going for him. And wealth. And he can always go by AJ. “AJ Duhamel” is a pretty sweet name.

Amanda on

I love this couple and love this name! He is adorable too..probably the cutest baby I have seen this year.

luca on

what a fun story! wish them all well~

Kim on

Sandy no it says they already decided his MIDDLE name after her uncle. His first name was never going to be Jack. I kind of like the name, I wouldn’t use it myself but it’s better than some of the other names out there.

Debs626 on

Horrible name to stick the kid with!

Sandra on

That was funny..As long as the name works for you and Josh, everyone else can suck it.

Jen on

Sandy did you read the article? Her son’s middle name Jack is after her late uncle.

And you do realize she’s a musician, too, don’t you? Why is it so odd she would be inspired by another musician?

Ada on

D you’re right. Axl is not in the same class. He’s an even better musician than Morrison and Marley.

Jess on

Try actually reading the article, Sandy. It clearly says the baby’s middle name comes from a male family member.

If I had named my kid after the moment when I felt him first kick, he’d be named Batman. Or The Dark Knight Rises. Either one is stupid, which is why I didn’t go with them. Just like she should’ve gone with something other than Axl.

UGH… sound like something to help fix a car flat tire…

Michael on

Good grief, I can hear the taunts already. “Hey Axl Jack. Can you go lift up my car so I can change a flat tire?” Were they competing with Kim and Kanye for worst baby name, or did they just want their kid to get picked on?

JJ on

I really like this couple and I support naming your child whatever, but a dream…really?

TSmallwood on

I like the couple and the name they chose.

RKF on

It always astounds me how selfish people can be. Why set your child up for ridicule with such a outlandish name? Maybe he can be friends with Kim Kardashian’s kid who has an equally asinine name.

Renee on

I went to school with someone with that name only it was spelled Axel. No one made fun of him. It’s really not that strange.

Anonymous on

Why all the negativity? Axel (granted, spelled that way, not Axl like Fergie and Josh spelled it) is a perfectly “normal” Swedish name that’s been around for ages!

Siabird on

I don’t get it what’s wrong with Axl? She had a beautiful healthy baby who cares what name she gave her baby. Why is everyone making such a big deal out if it. It is after all her baby.

We named our dog Axel and everyone asks us if we named him after Axl Rose….no I wouldn’t do that to my dog let alone my kid – hence the spelling difference

London Bridge on

Axl is quite Scandinavian [spelled Axel] perhaps Fergie & Josh Duhamel liked BEVERLY HILLS COP as well. I think there’s an Axel on the ABC sitcom THE MIDDLE [perhaps Fergie’s an ice skater & into triple axles [axels?] as well] The name “Axl Jack” makes me thinking of the Lovin’ Spoonful song “Nashville Cats”. John Sebastian/Fergie does not roll off the tongue as well as “Axl Jack/Nashville Cats” [same amount of syllables! What are the odds?] Anyhoo, I hope Axl Jack Duhamel has a mellower temper than Bill Bailey a.k.a. Axl Rose–I just remember hearing/reading stories of Axl Rose repeatedly beating the sh-t out of Erin Everly/Stephanie Seymour/next tall leggy model before he retired to his mansion to stew in his vat of frozen rage. Hopefully, Axl Jack Duhamel will be a bit mellower–and if he so chooses, he can go to the courthouse in 18 yrs & change his name to whatever pleases him. [Not unlike Barbara Hershey’s son, Free, who is now Tom on his driver’s license & other legal documents.]
