Drew Barrymore: Why I’ve Gone Public with This Pregnancy

Drew Barrymore Pregnancy Reveal Dave Spencer/Splash News OnlineP

Drew Barrymore has been basking in baby bliss — and she’s finally ready to share the excitement of her second pregnancy with the world.

Last time I never commented on it and people just stalked me the entire time,” the mom-to-be, 38, tells PEOPLE exclusively while promoting her Flower cosmetics line. “So yes, it’s happening, it’s true. I tried to keep it a secret for as long as possible.”

Having discussed her desire to expand her family further following the birth of daughter Olive, the actress recalls the moment she realized her dreams of a big brood with husband Will Kopelman were coming true.

“When I found out I was overjoyed. It always feels so surreal, it’s incredible,” she shares. “[I’m feeling] incredible, that ‘Here we go again‘ feeling. And blessed. Blessed!”

She adds, “You’re so lucky to get to do it. It’s such a miracle. I just felt really lucky.”

But while the well wishes have been pouring in since Barrymore’s announcement, the actress admits it’s her 13-month-old baby girl who should be the center of all the attention.

“Will is just thrilled — we both are — [because] we just wanted so badly for Olive to have a sibling,” she says. “In some ways, it’s really for her. So congratulations, Olive!”

As for any pregnancy cravings, Barrymore jokes she isn’t holding back — especially when it comes to her favorite cuisine.

“Oh my God, I’m eating everything! I can’t get enough of Chinese food. It’s all I want to eat!” she explains. “I’m feeling very, very happy. Happy and healthy — mentally and physically.”

How can you not root for Drew Barrymoore!

Jac on

I myself am pregnant. 28 weeks along. I can relate to her wanting a sibling for her daughter. My ‘only’ child has been begging for a sibling for at least 4 years now. I’m always telling my child, “This baby is for Mommy and Daddy, but most of all, it’s for you.” Had my child not persisted she may have remained an only child. We were content with one. I will say, our family has been thrilled to be expecting a second, especially me! We can’t wait to meet the baby!

She is awesome, I bet she is a great mother to little Olive, looks like a really happy baby, soon to be 2 yay!

Meg on

Congratulations Drew!!! All the best!

Gosh I love her! She is just really cool. I love how she doesn’t need all the frills of Hollywood life. She is content being normal and just natural. It gets so old seeing these “look at my body after baby” celebrities. It should be all about being a mom and your baby, NOT about who can have a baby and look better.

There must be something in Chinese food! I have craved that every pregnancy for the first trimester daily!!! Congrats to the family!

Drew is by far my most favorite actress of all time. I am so happy for her she seems to have everything she ever wanted. I hope her dreams keep coming true. She really deserves this happiness.

Your personality is shaped by siblings… the most important relationship you can have! Congrats!!!

My kids are 18 months apart. I was not thrilled or excited, but I’ve learned to cope and I love my children dearly. It is hard, and many of us don’t have the benefit of staff. It isn’t all sunshine and rainbows and the lives they live are unattainable for most of us “normal people”. That being said, every child is a gift.

Brandi on

Interesting perspective you have on parenthood. To say that you weren’t excited or thrilled and learned to cope followed by “every child is a blessing”…are you sure about that? Of course is always isn’t rainbows and butterflies, but Drew isn’t claiming that it is. And you don’t have to be celebrity wealthy to be excited about having a baby. Sorry motherhood turned out differently for you, but that’s no reason to downplay someone else being psyched about having another baby on the way.

I just love Drew, I’m so glad she has found such happiness for herself. And I can totally relate. My son is 2 so he’s still too young to fully understand siblings and the need for one, but we’re only having a second child for him. I would have been perfectly happy with one and done, but when my son is an adult and my husband and I are gone from this life, I want him to always have somebody. I know it’s not a guarentee that siblings will get along, but I hope my children will. And if for some reason his father and I become a burden, I don’t want him to have to handle it alone. In less than 8 weeks, he will have a sibling!!!

Kate on

What a lovely person. She really deserves to be happy- she spreads so much positivity and joy in what she says and does. Really happy that a person like Drew Barrymore can get what they want out of life.

elysummers on

Kudos to her and her husband. I wish them all the best. As an only child, now 56, I can tell you that it is sometimes lonely even if your surounded by loving people. I wish I had a sibling who could relate to me just once in a while.

Lori on

Doing this for Olive. So, Congratulations! Don’t you just love “mom” Drew Barrymore?

It’s nice to see how she has matured and risen over her dysfunctional childhood. It’s taken a while, but she seems really happy and stable and that is a great thing

Langloisloop on

I am sooo happy for you Drew!!! You are awesome and I know how great it is to actually be able to say you are happy and healthy in body and spirit! Good Luck!

kate on

@Anonymous, I believe that she has no staff. I saw an Oprah’s next chapter with her, and I believe that she and her husband make it a point to not have a nanny. I am sorry that it is so rough for you, but it is not like that for everyone. All the best to Ms. Barrymore and her wonderful family!

Selena on

Drew, we love you, but nobody cares. We look at the stupid pictures the paps take while we wait for the dentist or hair apptmts. No one with a real life actually cares. Hope you have a healthy pregnancy.

Carrie on

I am so thrilled for them. I have always loved Drew. I wish all young people could do like her and live a little & get it out of your system before starting a family. Way too many still have babies when they are still babies themselves–then either the grandparents, great grandparents or the state end up raising and paying for them. That is still a pity in this country–this age & time.

Melissa Edwards on

A massive congrats πŸ™‚ nice to hear that she is happy and healthy & so is her family πŸ™‚
