Sarah Michelle Gellar gets by with a little help from her friend … err, husband.

Robin Williams‘s The Crazy Ones costar, 36, says in the midst of one of the busiest times of her life — “We’ve moved houses, had two children’s birthdays, we are launching [a website]. Oh, and I’m launching a small TV show you might have heard of,” she recently told PEOPLE — she leans on hubby Freddie Prinze, Jr. for support.

“I have amazing help,” she explains when it comes to balancing work and being a mom to Charlotte Grace, 4, and Rocky James, 1.

She adds, “I have my mom who lives nearby. I have my husband who is so incredibly hands-on. Thank God he can cook or I would probably never eat.”

Prinze also makes sure the little ones get their daily bites in as well. “We try to make [everything] a family thing, so we’ll go to the farmer’s market and Charlotte can pick out a piece of fish,” Gellar says.

“And she and Freddie will go to the grill and she pretends to light her little grill. Actually, one of my best friends just got a pretend hibachi grill for Rocky for his first birthday so he can play on it, even though right now he can use it to stand up.”

But when it comes to teaching the couple’s kids about health, the former Cruel Intentions star has taken the reins.

Teaming up with her mom Rosellen, the two have partnered with Sounds of Pertussis to spread awareness about the importance of whooping cough vaccinations.

“You’re on the subway, you’re in line at Starbucks,” Gellar explains. “It’s so easily spread, and the only way to prevent it is for adults to get the booster shot. One of the great things about my job and what I do is I get to reach mass people. It’s great to know about a cool new handbag or shoes or a haircut someone gets, but we also have a responsibility. If we have information that can help save lives, then [spreading it is] what I want to do. Pertussis is really potentially fatal in infants.”

Even at their small age, the blonde beauty always makes her kids aware of the importance of staying healthy.

“You make everything something to their level,” she shares. “When we wash our hands, we sing the happy birthday song and we pick whose birthday it’s going to be. We go to the farmer’s market and pick out the fresh fruits and vegetables. Charlotte now has her own garden and she grows her own vegetables and gets to eat her fruits and vegetables from there. Children are never too young to learn about health.”

They’re such a cute couple. Really glad SMG finally joined Twitter! Actually didn’t think it was going to happen.

And it’s really interesting that Charlotte and Rocky have the same birthday. She said on Letterman the other day that it makes birthday party-planning hard, though.

Really liking The Crazy Ones so far (much better than Ringer) and I hope it’s successful.

she and Freddie seem like awesome parents. That sounds like such a fun way to get her kids to eat their vegetables! make it fun! 😀

Er, he’s so hands on bc he’s not really working.

He’s a hands on hubby because his career in Hollywood has flatlined… what else does he have to do besides take care of the kids? His wife is the one with the real career.

He can’t be hands on with me anytime & as much as he wants! Bloop!

I just hope Freddie can find the time to get more involved in voice-acting. His work in the ME ‘verse (Paragon Lost & ME3) was the best stuff he had done since Boys & Girls, over a decade ago.

It’d be awesome if Bioware could snatch him up for a future SWTOR role.

‘I’m grateful for my jobless, er, um, I mean hands-on husband.”

Loved his character in “Psych”! I would love to see him on more frequently…he was so funny and did a great job. They are a rally cute couple and they seem to be crazy about each other, and know how to work together to raise their family.

Lol I literally caught Cruel Intentions on tv just last night…how funny now to see an article about Sarah Michelle Gellar! I remember being in high school and watching her on All My Children with my best friend during days off from school and summer vacations 🙂 I’ve been a huge fan ever since and I think she’s turned into a phenomenal woman and sounds like one awesome mom. I also love that she’s using her position in life to spread awareness for a very important cause! Wishing her and her beautiful family all the best ♡

Getting shots for every thing reduces immunity in body! It weakens the body to fight normal germs! (like those spread by cough – which frankly can be EASILY AVOIDED BY JUST LOOKING AWAY!) These celebs!

They are such a cute couple, and their children are adorable too. It’s nice to see this in Hollywood.

Be aware parents: Pertussis has a very high rate of allergic reaction in the immune system, violent rejection of this particular vaccine is well documented. Be warned.

I believe in vaccines but, this one poses danger to SOME children!

I’ve always liked these two. I wonder why he’s not in films anymore. Maybe he’s a stay-at-home dad.

Glad that this lovely hollywood couple is still going strong.

Wow, if this article was about a male TV star and his hands-on wife, no one would be making cruel remarks about her being a failure because of her choice to stay home with their kids. SMG has ALWAYS been the breadwinner and it works for them. Get a grip.

Oh and by the way, I had pertussis this last summer. Luckily, my kids are up to date on their vaccinations and I was the only one who got sick. But even after I was noncommunicable, I had a persistent cough for months.

Ariel on

The pertussis vaccine isn’t very effective. In areas of outbreak, the majority of those affected have received the pertussis vaccine. This is because the virus constantly mutates, so the vaccine is never for the version of the virus that is currently floating around. You’re just going to be vaccinated for a virus that USED to be around.

You’re better off doing things that will give you a healthy immune system.

Rusty – why so sensitive??

What is WITH the assumption that if an actor is not on television or movies isn’t working?? Prinze is a producer, voice actor, and director in ADDITION to on screen acting. Seriously, LEARN something you idiots.

Rusty, my number one gripe with this site is the constant sexism . . . in fact, even the name of the blog changed from gender neutral (Celebrity Babies) to Moms and Babies Celebrity Baby Blog.

So a dad stays home to care for his kids instead of a nanny and all the negative nellies can say is its bc he’s not working. If they had a nanny, then she’d be at fault for working. Wow….these people sure can’t win.

Sorry, noorilhuda, but vaccines don’t work that way. And this is coming from an epidemiology doctoral student. I’ve worked in the pediatric ward with plenty of unvaccinated children and immunocompromised people over the past three years, and the old “dirt and play” method just doesn’t stop childhood diseases like pertussis, measles, diphtheria, etc. These nasty buggers used to kill by the millions (or billions, thanks to smallpox). Kudos to SMG for trying to raise awareness, especially since pertussis outbreaks are on a very sharp rise right now.

And I think it’s great that Freddie’s there for her and the kids so much. Nothing wrong with being a stay-at-home dad or taking on a less hectic work schedule for your family it you’re able to.

Having experienced both sides of the stay at home parent issue, I really do think it’s best if ONE parent can stay at home with the kids. It doesn’t really matter which parent it is, both are equally important in child-raising. And if it’s dad, he is NOT baby-sitting. It is more than a full-time job.

She obviously wants a career, she’s never off the television (show Ringer now a series with Robin Williams) for very long and he takes care of the kids and cooks(which she doesn’t do either) seems to me they have roles reversed and they like it that way.

Celebs can’t win. When they stay home with the kids and they “don’t work” it is bad. When they work, it’s bad. It’s a no win.

The not-so-smart rude commentors on this page who says he’s a hands-on day because he’s unemployed: 1) First check his Filmography online at least, would you? He works as an actor, voice actor, producer and was employed every year. Clearly you don’t know that when actors DON’T act, they still work by going to auditions and meetings. Plus, if I’m not mistaken FPJR also has a business going. ALSO, there is nothing wrong with one parent being a stay-at-home mom/dad or work less to spend more time with the kids. It’s a family choice.

What a joy to see this couple in Hollywood be so down to earth. And the reason is because they do stay out of the spotlight, and leave the EGOS at the door. They are a rarity in tinsel-town, but it just goes to show you that it can happen, you can be famous without plastering your every breathing moment across the social media scene. May they have a continued life together filled with love.
