Nothing whets the appetite quite like being pregnant — just ask Gail Simmons.

“I’m eating every day in great quantity,” the Top Chef judge, who’s six months pregnant with her first child, tells PEOPLE.

Simmons, 37, had plenty of cravings while shooting the 11th season of her Emmy-nominated reality competition show — premiering Oct. 2 — in New Orleans over the summer.

“I had a lot of cravings for popsicles and peanut butter … not together,” she says. “All I wanted for breakfast was peanut butter [and] jelly sandwiches and all I wanted in the afternoon was a popsicle because it was 100 degrees.”

So it’s not surprising that Simmons, who’s due in January, got ready for Sunday’s Emmy Awards by — you guessed it — eating some more!

“I had a really lovely day. I had breakfast on my terrace with a bunch of friends. I always make sure to eat a hearty breakfast, especially these days, but in general because you don’t eat again until 8 o’ clock at night,” the mom-to-be explains. “So the five of us just sat on the terrace and had a leisurely morning.”

And while Simmons doesn’t yet know if she’s having a boy or a girl — and says she and her husband Jeremy Abrams would “like it to be a surprise” — there’s one thing that’s certain.

“I’m gonna grow!” she says. “That’s for sure.”

LOVE her! Congrats Gail! I could never have waited to find out, I thought it was a surprise @ 20 weeks also.

I’m sure plenty will bash her for her food comment but she looks great & she should enjoy her pregnancy anyway she likes. All you mean people had to eat crow after bashing JS & then she lost the weight too! We need to support all women.

While I certainly support her decision to wait until the birth to find out if it is a boy or a girl, I really wish people would stop using the phrase “I want it to be a surprise.” If you find out through ultrasound, it is *still* a surprise, you just find out earlier. That said, I wish her all the best.

Is it me or is she showing a lot very early ? For a first pregnancy?

She can’t talk about it that much — it’s a Jewish superstition to not do so.

No idea who she is. I thought it said Gene Simmons, lol.

Lisa54- She’s not that early on in the pregnancy. The article says she’s 6 months.

Kristy- Obviously they mean they want to be surprised in the delivery room. Also, not everyone feels that it’s a surprise if you find out earlier. Some feel that it’s like opening your Christmas presents early- not a good thing.

Okay, let me clarify before anyone jumps on me: Christmas or other holiday presents. I understand that not everyone celebrates Christmas (and that probably includes Gail, since she’s Jewish).

I am quite confused about this article because originally it was titled about her cravings now its changed. Why? It made more sense before.
