Robin Thicke: Julian Is My Good Luck Charm

08/14/2013 at 03:00 PM ET

Jason Gann Welcomes Son Xano Javier Mateo/Startraks

Robin Thicke has the number one album and single in the country right now and his son Julian Fuego may have something to do with it.

“He’s obviously the best thing that’s ever happened to me. He’s my good luck charm,” the singer, 36, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.

And although Thicke is topping the charts — and is nominated for three VMAs for his “Blurred Lines” video — he may be facing some competition from his mini me.

“He’s 3 and wants to be a rock star! He’’s always talking about hooking up with the band. He tells me he’s going to New York and ‘They’re going to pay me, Daddy!’ It’s cute and adorable,” he says.

Luckily, Julian has a little time to catch up to his dad’s stage shows. Thicke, however, does admit the toddler has a leg up on him when it comes to his dancing skills.

“He can get down. I groove. I wouldn’t insult dancers by saying I’m dancing. I call myself a groove man,” says Thicke.

For much more on Thicke, including his summer hit “Blurred Lines” and his relationship with wife Paula Patton, pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.

Why all the different last names? Thicke, Fuego, and Patton. I don’t get it?

LM on

I think Fuego is his middle name. I”m sure Robin and Paula have different last names because they had careers before they were married and wanted to keep their professional names.

Anyway, the baby is adorable. Good looking family.

@Anonymous I would assume Fuego is the middle name and Patton is her career name.

I thought Paula was the best “thing” — and I wonder if having Robin as a dad is the “best thing” for Julian, given that dad is a stoner, toker, doper…yuck!

One of the cutest things was when Paula said Robin asked if Julian would get any darker. Genetics! Julian may never get any darker because Paula is also bi-racial. He is possibly the cutest baby ever. I didn’t realize his mom was a soap opera star.

I think Fuego is his middle name. Paula’s full name, legal name is, Paula Maxine Patton. Julian is adorable!

Love Robin! He needs to remake the song that his mother sang back in the day. The name of the song was friends and lovers. I absolutely love that song!

Fuego means fire, guess it’s his middle name or they gave him a stagename already :p. Cute boy!

What an adorable little guy.

What a darling boy!

I thought Paula found the world “biracial” to be offensive and she referred to herself as a “black woman”. This kid (to me) looks more like his dad. And where did he get the blonde hair? He’s cute nonetheless.

Cute little boy. I love that Robin calls what he does grooving instead of dancing.

Julian is a cutiepie! Congrats Robin, “Blurred Lines” makes me happy when I hear it. More than one drop shows itself in so many ways besides color of skin ~ luv it

Call me crazy, but I see Robin’s dad, Alan in Julian…did you know he co-wrote the theme to “Diff’rent Strokes?”

Julian is a pretty cool kid name.

What a cuuuuutttteeee little boy! Paula said that his name is Julian Fuego because he was “the fire in her belly” and that they wanted him to have his own identity. Lovely family

i always thought robin was a girls name

Clearly the name Robin covers both genders and there are plenty of male Robins. Robin Williams, Robin Leach, Robin Gibb, Robin Harris (deceased)… What a silly statement.

I hope he teaches his son to respect women better than he has #blurredlines

He is awesome. I saw him perform last night and got to meet him. He is sweet and has the best hair!

Other anonymous, not quite sure you understand the meaning behind the lyrics and the song.

I can just imagine him feeding Julian, “You know you want it…”.
