The Prince of Cambridge: Here’s the First Look!

07/23/2013 at 02:28 PM ET

Hail to the (future) king!

The world got its first glimpse of William and Kate‘s newborn baby boy Tuesday on the steps of St. Mary’s hospital in London. The day-old prince, swaddled in a blanket, already looked to be waving to the crowd.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did not reveal the baby’s name – preferring to wait, much as William’s parents, Charles and Diana, did 31 years ago in delaying the revelation of his name for several days.

“We are still working on a name, so we will have that as soon as we can,” William told reporters gathered outside the hospital.

Stepping out of the hospital to cheers, Kate wore a bespoke cornflower blue crepe-de-chine dress by British designer, Jenny Packham, while her husband William wore a matching blue button-down shirt.

Pausing to answer questions from the crowd, William said of his new son, “He’s got a good pair of lungs on him, that’s for sure. He’s a big boy – he’s quite heavy.”

He added, when the question came up, “He has got her looks, thankfully.”

“It’s very emotional,” Kate said of the experience. “It’s a moment that any parent having just given birth will know what this feeling feels like.”

“It’s very special,” added William as he held their newborn, wrapped in an aden + anais muslin swaddle topped with a lightweight blanket.

The new father also said to the gathered press: “I will remind him of his tardiness when he’s a bit older because I know how long you have all been sat out here, so hopefully the hospital and all you guys can go back to normal now and we can look after him.”

As for the baby’s hair, “He has way more than me, thank God,” said his father.

Regarding the changing of the diaper: “He’s done his first nappy,” Kate said of the proud dad.

Royal sources confirm William practiced putting in the Britax Baby Safe car seat and driving away in the run-up to his smooth performance Tuesday.

In a statement from the Palace, the young couple continued to thank the hospital staff — just as they did earlier that day.

“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge will be discharged this evening from St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their son will travel home to Kensington Palace. Their Royal Highnesses would like to reiterate their thanks to the hospital for the care and treatment they have all received.”

They seem like such nice, laid back people, especially for royals. Congratulations! I’m sure they can’t wait to get back home with their new little guy.

@Betty Bissonnette: you clicked on the CelebrityBabies page, what did you expect to find here?

Lady on

@ KA –

Ummm maybe because she just had a child 24 hours ago – an almost 9lb child at that….clearly you have no children otherwise you wouldn’t be asking such stupid questions

Chloe on

Actually, he’s probably much more special. I don’t think many people on here are the parent of a future king :)

Hea on

Betty Bissonnette – While I agree that every child is special. This is, however, a child that made world history as soon as he showed up as a positive pregnancy test.

Loralee on

Beautiful baby. Ka, her belly is big (not that big) because she just had a baby! Wishing this family every happiness!

Xan on

Celebsarah, I noticed that, too. But, given that a path had been cleared for the family car to travel to the palace–meaning no traffic whatsoever–and that William probably drove excruciatingly slowly in order to give photogs and fans a chance to snap a photo, I think the likelihood of an accident was slim to none. The baby was probably more likely to be dropped when his mother handed him to his dad than get injured in the car on the way home. Hopefully, someone will step in and explain how to properly harness a baby, though!

ka, it takes the body time to regain its former shape and for the uterus to shrink back to size. She’s just had a human inside her for the best part of a year, give her some time!

They make such a lovely little family, I agree with SAR and Lady, they really do seem laid back and down-to-earth, and so happy together.

Welcome little prince :)

Holiday on

Kate looks gorgeous especially considering she just had a baby 24 hours ago

Jenna on

Ka, is your question for real? If you missed all biology classes at school, I am sorry. Otherwise, I must say that I am a little annoyed with people’s obsession with pregnant women being skinny the day after giving birth? As someone wrote, the uterus is still “inflated” and won’t return to normal size immediately. Also, the skin on the belly is a little bit stretched. Otherwise, the pregnant belly would crack open….even the skinniest person in the world will not have a flat belly the day after delivery. / Mother of three and NOT fatter than before pregnancy#1 but it takes a few months

April Crook on

Kate is still as beautiful as ever and he is a cutie pie

martina on

Awwww, how adorable! Congratulations. They seem like a sweet couple. Kate looks gorgeous just 24 hours after having a baby.

michele kitson on

Congrats and best of luck..he’s adorable

Susanne on

Because she gave birth less than 24 hours from that picture! Your stomach doesn’t go down immediately!

Joie on

He is harnessed fine for England. They do not have the chest clips. And they have to be checked just like every where else before leaving the hospital. The baby is fine.

Joie on

But I should add, That I would never in a million years do that for my kids, But someone stated that this was probably once.

Anonymous on

to who ever who cares about the royal baby i agree all kids r special but what a really rude so say… If u r going to say something negative then keep it to urself!!!! why theres problems in the world bc pple just need to keep their pie shut….

Kelli on

We live in England and carseats here are different than the US, the prince is buckled in according to UK laws and regulations.

This little guy is adorable and they just seem like such a wonderful, happy family. I loved how there was a hint of tears in Kate’s eyes yesterday when greeting the press. Almost like she just could not believe that all these people were here for them and the love and positive energy was directed at them.

Soph on

I’m British, and our rear facing baby car seats are the same as yours with a five point harness. It looks like the baby’s been put in swaddled and the strap’s slid off his shoulder. But it’s only a mile from St Mary’s to Kensington, and they had a full police escort, so a crash was never going to be particularly likely.

Mira on

Ka is a 12 year-old.

Regarding the car seat, you can’t leave any hospital without a proper car seat. He is fitted properly. Just like every state in the US has different laws and regulations, so do different countries. There is nothing wrong with how he is in the car!
